SEC rules.
That's FOUR consensus national championships in a row, by 3 different teams. That's a record, folks. The conference didn't have as much depth this year as we normally do, but you match either Florida or Alabama against Boise State, TCU, Cincinnati, Texas, Iowa, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, or Oregon, and the only team with half a chance would be Texas.

This is a period of unparalleled dominance by one conference. College football is cyclical, and at some point, the SEC will undergo a years-long national championship drought - but for now, we rule.

5. LOL. SEC rules.
You sure play by a different set of them, that's for sure. What? Double the infractions of the Big Ten?

6. Not quite.
I got curious about this and looked it up on the NCAA.org site. Since the NCAA began tracking major infractions cases in 1953, SEC schools have been penalized 48 times. That's less than the 55 infractions cases from Big 12 schools, but more than the PAC-10 (41) and the Big 10 (40). So, no, not double the infractions of the Big 10. 1.2X the infractions. But then again, I wouldn't expect a fan of a conference with eleven teams that called itself the Big 10 to be that good at math.  And the SEC has one more university than the Big 10, so if you factor that in, it's actually 1.1X the infractions. To be perfectly honest, I'm a little surprised. I thought the numbers would be a little worse.

7. I think I remember, Ga, seeing a stat for the last five years..
... I know it wasn't double but it was significant. Hell, I think Kiffin has more than the Big Ten all by his lonesome. We won't hear about it though. Not a long as eSECpn is running the show.

8. OH... you're talking about secondary violations.
I don't have any kind of data for those, but have you ever seen what the NCAA considers a secondary violation? Some of them are ridiculous. As for Kiffin, it wouldn't surprise me. They don't call him "Lane Violation" for nothing. I'm pretty certain he's going to get UT in big trouble.

9. Actually, Cincinnati was the only team without a chance
Edited on Sun Jan-10-10 01:16 PM by Awsi Dooger
They don't run the ball, 116th among 120 teams. That's a recipe for physical avalanche. They were unranked in preseason, meaning their talent level was not comparable to the premier programs.

The other schools you mentioned are not automatic rejects, with the exception of Georgia Tech. They overachieve in the regular season based on offensive style.

Hate to break it to the SEC Kool-Aid types, but the other teams on your list were extremely legit and could have given Alabama all it could handle. It's convenient to watch Texas stay reasonably close and assert everyone else would be slaughtered.

The most important stat in college football is YPPA defense. The national champ is always in the Top 10. I can't remember the last time it failed.

Iowa was #2, TCU #3, Ohio State #5, Texas #8, Boise State #10, and Oregon #14. That covers your list, other than rejects Cincinnati #57 and Georgia Tech #75.

Any of those defensively sound teams could have given Alabama a game. Florida was extremely fortunate to draw a complete fraud. Notice that Nebraska was #1 and nearly defeated Texas. Somehow I'd love to bet a subjective list would have asserted Nebraska had no shot against Alabama or Texas. And notice that #9 is Tennessee, which nearly defeated Alabama other than blocked FGs:

10. Excellent post, Awsi!!!!!
The #2 defense. With possibly 8 returning. I'd say a Iowa-Nebraska match-up would be a dream for folks who like great defense.. I like our offense a little more.

11. Thanks, Condem; YPPA defense is my pet stat

It unveils the truth in college and pro.

Last year USC was #1 by an astounding margin, 7 tenths of a yard. They allowed 4.6 for the season and not higher than 6.1 in any regular season game. I've never seen anything like it.

Florida 2008 was extremely fortunate to draw Oklahoma and not USC in the title game. You can check that link and go back a year. Oklahoma was #58 in YPPA defense at 6.7. So the Gators avoided a 4.6 defense in favor of 6.7, similar to this season with Cincinnati. Notice what happened when Florida encountered Alabama 2008, which is very high on the list.

It's hardly complicated but the media thrills to ignore it. Makes for some easy wagers.

Don't get me wrong, the top SEC teams play great pass defense. In fact, I'm sure Saban was annoyed that Texas got away with a few pathetic flanker screens that busted for big yardage. Normally the SEC chews those up, as Florida did last year.

But it's nonsense to assert the SEC is head and shoulders above anyone else.

BTW, the Jets lead the NFL by huge margin at 5.4. My Dolphins were last at 8.2. That's like a different species. You didn't back into the playoffs when you held 16 opponents to 5.4 YPPA.

12. Very interesting.
The media wouldn't know if Christ was crucified or shot at a poker table. Where does Boise State rank in all this? The media darlings going into 2010.

14. I'll argue with it
6-4 is better than 4-3. The SEC won 60% of its bowl games, the Big 10 won 57%.
