This is the right place for this thread.
I'll be posting my weekly report in a minute, but it doesn't include this event. So I thank the Captain for this information.
My big news is the start of the 72nd tournament in Wijk aan Zee yesterday. It runs through January 31.

5. Interesting that we had Fischer/Spassky, etc. at the same time as Ali/Frazier, etc. |

There are a lot of parallels between boxing and chess.

Max Euwe, in addition to being world champion (1935-37), was also the European amateur heavyweight champion in the twenties.
Lennox Lewis and the Kletchko bothers play chess.
Dr. Emanuel Lasker, world champion from 1895 to 1921, said that chess was less like an art or a science than it was a fight.

7. This is also a class issue. UMBC is considered bottom-of-the-rung college. So, their |

beating the crap out of Ivy League schools to win the last NCAA championship is awesome.

9. Well, look at the team they've assembled |

I knew Sabina Foisor was attending UMBC. She's actually Romanian and comes from a well-known chess playing family. While she is studying in Baltimore, she will play chess as an American. She joined the US Chess Federation and competed in the US Women's Championship in St. Louis last year.
Other than Ms. Foisor, it looks like UMBC has assembled an impressive collection of grandmasters. Kritz and Ehrenburg are neither one Kasparov, but they're good enough to beat most US players except those at the very top. I'm not at all surprised that team of that caliber can win in US college competition.
