In South Florida's Super Bowl lore, Ted Hendricks is No. 1
Edited on Sun Jan-31-10 09:02 AM by trumad
I loved this guy when he played....

It isn't always easy to be sure who Ted Hendricks is, or was. It isn't simple or neat. So start with what we know. With what is verifiable.

Hendricks, ``The Mad Stork,'' enjoyed the greatest football success of anyone to come out of South Florida. He is the most accomplished NFL man who is ours.

It is quantifiable. He is the only ``local'' to have won four Super Bowl rings. He is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. If we have a Champions Club, put the gavel in Hendricks' hand, and he'll bring the meeting to order.

1. I saw the "Mad Stork" play Florida in the mid- 60s. Though the "U" lost, he was great. nt

2. I only knew him from his Raider days.
A little too young before that to remember him on the Packers and Colts. Wish I had seen him play more, as I learned to really appreciate him in retrospect.

3. I thought all players were the same until dad said watch #89 on every play
That's literally how he got me to stay in my seat at the Orange Bowl and pay attention to the game instead of wanting to run around. My mouth was quickly ajar, and I looked at my dad with stunned eyes.

It didn't look fair, one guy so much bigger and stronger that he could ignore the basics and try to rip the ball away and head in the opposite direction, play after play. Often the ref would blow the whistle and tell Ted sorry, we blew it dead. :)

P.P.S. Wiki says he was born not in Fla. but in Guatemala!
