Redskins cut 10 veterans on eve of free agency
SHBURN, Va. — Guard Randy Thomas, receiver Antwaan Randle El and kick returner Rock Cartwright were among 10 players cut by the Washington Redskins on the eve of free agency.

Cornerback Fred Smoot, defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin, running back Ladell Betts and backup quarterback Todd Collins were also released Thursday night as the Redskins cleared salary cap space in the first major moves under the new brain trust of general manager Bruce Allen and coach Mike Shanahan.

“Obviously, it’s a day of change for the Redskins,” Allen said.

The next big moves were expected to be put in motion at the midnight start of free agency, when the Redskins were again expected to be aggressive on the open market. Big-spending owner Dan Snyder has yielded roster control to Shanahan, but the coach and Allen have many needs to fill as they take over a 4-12 season and look ahead to a season with no salary cap.

See Jon..The Cards aren't the only ones cleaning house. At least the Cards are getting picks for their trades.
Some of these players I don't mind seeing go but others like Randy Thomas and Rock Cartwright...ugh....x(

1. This may not be too bad if this is true

"Redskins were again expected to be aggressive on the open market."

Also with Denver as my favorite AFC team I'm familiar how Shannahan works. He constantly releases but brings in players and is mostly successful in this regard. His smartest move was trading Portis for Baily and a 2nd round pick. With that pick he drafted Tatum Bell who gave Denver a couple of thousand yard seasons and he traded Bell for Dre Bly (not straight up, it involved picks and other things that I can't remember) who has over 40 interceptions in his career. In '03 Denver had a horrible secondary so they needed a shut down corner plus he had a knack for plugging in virtually any guy and turn him into a 1,000 yard back. However he's done some things I was unhappy with but overall he makes good decisions in bringing the right players.

Thing is with my Cardinals is they have no plan. They aren't showing any interest in any of the big FA's and they have late round picks including the ones they got from the Ravens. However this may be bad news--too soon to tell--just trying to show the bright side. :)

2. Randy hasnt been healthy in a while and thats a problem.
I wouldnt have minded keeping Randle El. Not as a punt returner, but as a wide receiver. He was always a solid option there.

3. Big Sam retired also.
Six-time Pro Bowler and by far the best OL the team has had in several years. Even though I have this bad taste in my mouth for most former Bama players, I give him credit for being a great Redskin and class person both on and off the field. He is staying with the Skins as an intern and coaching through the end of training camp.

4. Yeah I heard about that
Glad he's staying on. I did no realize he had spinal stenosis! I know two people with this condition and they have 7 back surgeries in the past. 10 years between them. For him to play as long as he did and as well as he did is amazing.
