QB David Carr signs with San Francisco
Edited on Mon Mar-08-10 12:19 PM by Auggie
March 8, 2010 / San Francisco Chronicle

The 49ers will have a new backup quarterback in 2010 with David Carr agreeing to terms Sunday for what is believed to be a two-year deal, according to a source close to the Carr family.

ESPN and the New York Daily News also confirmed that Carr agreed to terms with the 49ers. He is expected to sign the contract today.

The move probably means the end of the line for Shaun Hill, who has gone 10-6 as a starter in four seasons with the 49ers. A team spokesman could not be reached Sunday night to confirm any moves.

The imminent signing of Carr is in keeping with coach Mike Singletary's desire to improve the quarterback position as the club believes he provides a better option after Alex Smith than Hill did.

Shaun Hill is the only starting QB on the roster without a losing record, unless you count back-up Nate Davis who is 0-0. I don't know what management's problem is with Hill. I guess they think Carr is a more logical replacement.

Carr had been backing up Eli Manning on the Giants.

In a related story, linebacker Patrick Willis reportedly tweeted last Friday the 49ers should go after "a difference maker like Michael Vick" and said of Carr "We have three qbs that are better than him -- that's a waste of his time." On Sunday Willis apologized for hurting any feelings saying he will embrace Carr, and "we will win together, congrats and welcome aboard." No link for this available.

1. Good for the 49'ers and unfortunate for the Giants
But Carr was way too good to be a backup QB, especially for the Giants who have a young reliable QB.

2. If nothing else...
I hope Carr pushes Alex Smith for the starting job. In fact, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he's the starting QB by mid-season. Carr's got a much bigger upside than Smith, not to mention a stronger arm, and Willis will love him if he takes over and starts winning some games. All in all I think this is a good signing...

3. I've read many times Hill performs awful in practice
but some way excels on the field (if you you can call it that).

I agree Smith will be pushed and wouldn't be surprised to see Carr take over too. Those career sacks (265) are cause for concern -- not from a health angle but from a playing angle. Does he hold onto the ball too long or have his o-lines been really that bad? Or is it something else?

I'd trade all the arm strength in the world for the ingenuity and mobility of Montana. I thought Shaun Hill brought a little of that to the field.

One thing I'm fairly sure of -- 49ers won't be drafting any QBs this year.
