1. Back/neck injury, apparently

Tiger withdraws at TPC with back injury

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Tiger Woods withdrew from The Players Championship on Sunday with an injury that he fears might be a bulging disk in his upper back.

"I've been playing with a bad neck for about a month," Woods said.

After hitting his drive well to the right on the seventh hole, Woods called for an official. He hit his second shot and grimaced, then walked to the middle of the fairway to shake hands with playing partner Jason Bohn before leaving on a golf cart.

Woods had his head bowed for several minutes as he sat in front of his locker, and other times kept his eyes closed as if he were in the middle of a nap before answering questions from three reporters. At one point, he slammed his golf shoe to the ground.

3. Celznic: ‘Injury’ was just an excuse for Tiger to quit
I’m not sure we’ve ever seen anybody crash and burn quite as spectacularly as Tiger has. This isn’t just one aspect of his life that fell apart. It’s everything — physical, mental, emotional — all going kaflooey together. All it lacks is a felony charge to qualify as a total disaster.

No one, including Tiger, knows where this goes next. He may decide it’s a good idea to have surgery on the neck to avoid having to embarrass himself again on the golf course. Or he may convince himself his game is right there and everything will be better the next time out.

===

But it’s not likely he’ll ever dominate again. The rest of the Tour respects his accomplishments and talent but doesn’t fear him anymore. Phil Mickelson is the best golfer on the planet now. A lot of kids who look at Tiger as an old fart who used to be great are taking their shots at the top.

Tiger may come back, but it’s not his Tour to own anymore. Not after he took up quitting on rounds and tournaments.

7. I'm skeptical
I'm leaning towards the, Maybe there was some injury. He probably could have played with it fine, but because he was sucking up the golf course again, he decided to just quit.

6. Back injury is common among golfers
albeit lower back injury. But considering how hard Woods swings the club I don't think it's hard to imagine it screwing up his entire body.
