Let's bring the binocular issue into focus. It comes down to this: If a team steals signs because of an opponents' carelessness or stupidity, that's fine. If a team steals signs with the use of technology, that's out of line.

Monday night at Coors Field, Phillies bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer was spotted using binoculars. He told manager Charlie Manuel they were for eyeballing catcher Carlos Ruiz's stance and framing of pitches. One problem. He was looking through them when the Rockies were pitching.

The Phillies are considered masters at swiping signs. That's just another reason they are the reigning National League bullies.

But if they can't see that using binoculars was just wrong, then maybe they need to check the prescription on their glasses.
