Oakland Raiders seek $9.55M from former QB JaMarcus Russell
Associated Press / May 27, 2010

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders are trying to get nearly $10 million back from recently released quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

The team on Thursday confirmed that a grievance has been filed seeking back wages from Russell. Yahoo! Sports first reported the story. The report says the Raiders are seeking $9.55 million from Russell in what was paid as salary advances for the 2010-12 seasons.

Russell was released earlier this month. He has been paid more than $39 million since being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft.

Russell won only seven of his 25 starts with Oakland. He completed just 52.1 percent of his passes in his career with 18 touchdowns, 23 interceptions, 15 lost fumbles and a passer rating of 65.2.

1. In return, Russell demands the last three years of his life back.
And competent coaching.

2. if he has to pay it back
then the NFL has the worse contracts ever. same thing happened to Vick. These supposed up front guaranteed money is hardly guaranteed.

6. I'm not a fan of Vick's
I think the contracts are a joke. "guaranteed money is bull. The contracts in the NFL are all one sided.

7. Yeah. A lot of the contracts are worded such that if the team
doesn't want pay a player the money, they just have to cut him before a certain date. Unless you are Payton Manning or Tom Brady, then chances are you will get screwn at some point.

9. I don't think this is the guaranteed money (signing bonus).
I think they were paying him (loaning him) money based on future non-guaranteed pay. With Vick (and Rickey Williams), they went after the guaranteed money, but I don't think that's the case, here.

10. UPDATE: S.F. Chronicle...
"The Raiders say the contract was changed at one point and that he's not allowed to keep all the money he collected before his May 6 release. Oakland contends that some of the money was actually an advance on his salaries for the upcoming three seasons.

Not so, Russell's agent said.

"The money in question was fully guaranteed. That is why JaMarcus was forced to hold out and miss all of training camp as a rookie," Eric Metz told Yahoo! Sports. "The Raiders know that and this is our only comment."

11. It won't be the first time Davis has been to court over a salary dispute.
I think Shanahan is still waiting for his check.

Rumor is they're looking to be the Jets to the 49ers' Giants in the new stadium to be built in Santa Clara -- right next door! :scared:
