I get chills thinking about it
Football. Outdoors. In non-idyllic weather.

Who knew?

Old guys like me — I’ll be 61 for the 2014 Super Bowl in the New Meadowlands — need extra time to bundle up. (Note to self: Hilton Tent City, ASAP, for the holy trinity outdoor winter gift pack — thermal long johns, hand warmers, flask.)

The NFL made history Tuesday when, on a fourth secret vote among its 32 perpetually suntanned owners, it landed the sport’s showcase game in East Rutherford, N.J., no matter the temperature on Feb. 2, 9, or 16 in 2014 (Super Bowl Sunday TBA).

A very bold move for these guys, because they had to waive a provision in the Sacred Super Bowl Documents — presumably kept under lock and key in a Pasadena incubator — that mandates the game be played in warm-weather climes or in a domed stadium. I have nothing against warm weather, but domed football stadia have always left me cold, no matter how much sense they make, how much heat they generate, or how many luxury suite amenities they breed.

Indoor football is kind of like decaf cappuccino or no-cal/low-carb beer. One sip, and you’re left to wonder, “The point of this is . . . ?’’

1. I'm glad they made this decision
I'd like to see this game being passed around the league. I do understand how it might be an unpleasant experience for the fans but coming from someone who HATES cold weather, I would go, that is if I could afford it.

2. One good snow storm before and during the game and bam...
nobody in---nobody out---

Seriously a stupid move by the NFL.

5. Meh. Take a chance in life.
Besides, remember the Miami/New England game the day after a serious blizzard hit up here? Fans were piling themselves on snow banks to see the game because all the seats weren't even cleared yet. It ended up being one of the most memorable games in years, with fans clearly loving every second of it.

Boy, these fans look miserable!

C'mon, live a little, will ya? :)

8. That's not the point...
One good Blizzard and the game is screwed... No inbound or outbound flights---no halftime show... no corporate events...

This game is all about corporate sponsorships...period. They pay the big bucks to the NFL and if the game is disrupted by a blizzard---it will be the last time they ever have a SB in an outdoor stadium where blizzards occur.

12. One good Nor'easter and the NFL will be fucked.
Yeah. 25+ years in the mid-atlantic and southern New England, I have seen more the my share of nor'easters.

Plus growing up in Ohio, we had the storms that left 15 foot high snow drifts.

Dumbest fucking idea the NFL has come up with.

17. Bad weather fucks up everything else about the Super Bowl.
They may get good ratings but a good blizzard will quickly negate that two or three times over.

As I said, the NFL is fucked if a major snow storm hits the east coast.

What if the teams are not able to get to New York until Sunday morning, the day of the game. Let's face it, San Diego or the Frisco Niner's have no concept of snow.

3. Uhhmm. It does not bring any chills to me, or even a tingle down my leg, as Tweety would
say.

I think it is sheer stupidity to bring it to a northern climate. The Super Bowl is a reward to the players and the fans for winning their conference. As in college where nearly all of bowl games are played in warm climates (Boise's bowl game doesn't count, because football was not meant to be played on a blue field), so to is the Super Bowl.

While NY may help the NFL break even on this debacle, any other northern venue will be a money-losing adventure for the NFL.

4. They could hold the SB in the Arctic and it would make money for them.
You're fooling yourself if you think they'll lose money on any Super Bowl, regardless of where it's held. It's become the biggest single sporting event on the planet, watched by over a billion people worldwide.

Had no idea you were older than me, FB! I guess the "boy" in your name threw me off.
