This was the classic example of long hitting boneheads. Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson are at least to me not the thinking man's player. I don't ever remember Tiger ever making a mental mistake like these two. Golf needs Tiger and Phil competing.

He's been playing well in recent tournaments and should only get better. He recovered from the worst round of his professional career at the US Open. I expect him to do well from here on out. Honestly I think that not realizing that patch of land was a bunker is a mistake many would make. Yes in 2004 the PGA decided that every bunker is a hazard and even warned players with a notice in the locker room. Johnson admitted that he didn't read it but so did other golfers such as Nick Watney who said they get so many sheets he doesn't feel that anyone actually reads them.

2. mental mistakes cost Tiger the US Open this year. |

at least, that was his assessment after it was over.
I think that, ultimately, they probably had to assess the penalty on Johnson, but I can see how he wouldn't think that was a bunker when everyone was crowded around him there.
