49ers release Nate Davis, sign Troy Smith..
The 49ers signed former Ravens quarterback Troy Smith to a one-year contract Monday, costing third-string quarterback Nate Davis his job after one season.

Davis did not play as a fifth-round pick last year, but developed some fans who wanted to see him compete with Alex Smith for the starting job this past offseason.

Niners head coach Mike Singletary made clear during training camp that was not going to happen. He came down hard on Davis after the second exhibition game, questioning his work ethic in the offseason and declaring him not ready to compete for so much as the backup job with David Carr.

In Smith, they have the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner who has Davis' athleticism and more experience.

I don't like this move. Sure, Smith has more experience, but Davis has a much bigger upside. Singletary seems to have it in for Nate..not sure why, possibly there's something we don't know.

Anyway, the Niners now have two QBs named Smith. Plus a Buckeye passing combination of Troy Smith to Ted Ginn...just swell.
