5. They've tried it 3 times
most recently in 1979.

A complete list of attempts is on Wikipedia.

Most came with no time on the clock. A few are mystifying, like the first one - from 30 yards, taken in the 3rd quarter?!!!

2. how awful does that punt/kickoff have to be for a team to be in a position
to kick a field goal? Are teams attemping 80 yard field goals?

3. Not 80 yarders
But less than 70. You need to make a fair catch of a kick. A kick out of the back of the end zone can easily stay within 70 yards of the goal.

10. There's no time restriction
It's just most common at that time because there's not enough time to drive down the field.

This is allowed in the NFL and HS, but not in college.
