5. This is false. No one got it right. |
|
It is a myth that a muff may not be advanced. A muffed punt may not be advanced because it's considered a kick. And a muffed kickoff may not be advanced by the kicking team. But a muffed handoff, fumble, or pass may be advanced.

I remember the Arizona State-Arizona game last year, Arizona St scored a game tying touchdown with little time left and was able to hold Arizona on defense. When the punt came, the ASU punt returner (also the same guy that scored the tying TD) dropped the ball and when an Arizona player picked up the ball the refs blew it dead right away because you can't advance a muffed ball. It just prolonged the pain though, Arizona ended up kicking a game winning field goal.

11. To be fair, I'm pretty sure most people assumed "muff" was meant in the kicking context. |
|
Rules trivia questions are fun, but not as much fun when it's a "gotcha" like that.

12. There's no punishment for getting it wrong. |

At least some football announcers have taken time to learn the rules and they've learned that the word "muff" has specific technical meaning in various circumstances. If you listen closely you'll hear them clarifying statements they make on TV. This is a chance for all of us to learn more about the game.
