BREAKING -- 49ers fire Offensive Coach Jimmy Raye

sfgate.com / 9-27-10

So much for Alex Smith's 21-month streak of having the same offensive coordinator ...

Three games into a season characterized by an ineffective offense, the 49ers have fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye. The news was first reported by NFL.com and now is official from the 49ers.

Raye has overseen the 49ers' unpredictable offense since January 2009. The offense was supposed to be hitting its stride this season, but instead has stumbled in embarrassing fashion.

Last year's offense was led at first by quarterback Shaun Hill, and then by Alex Smith. It moved from being a "smashmouth" run offense to one that operated a little more like a passing, spread offense, in an attempt to match Smith's abilities.

The new coordinator, or at least the person performing those duties, will be quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson. CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, speaking this morning on KNBR, said that Johnson has spent time studying spread offenses. On Sunday, the 49ers relentlessly, but ineffectively, handed off and dumped passes off to running back Frank Gore. Perhaps with Raye's firing, this approach will be altered, perhaps significantly.

The 49ers this season are 0-3.

1. Sing Needs To Go Next
A fish stinks from its head down. Maybe York will ride a segway off a cliff sometime soon.

2. I wish York would sell
The only difference between the york and debartolo ownership was 5 super bowls and yearly playoff appearences. They should take a hint.

3. Should have kept Mike Martz..
who knows how far along they'd be by now. I like a lot of things about Singletary, but he's made some poor personnel decisions, Raye being one of them.

They need a new QB. Heck, they need a passing attack that looks NFL ready..

5. Singletary just said in his press conference he made the decision
Edited on Mon Sep-27-10 02:15 PM by Auggie
after watching film from the first three games last night. Said he spent all night in the Santa Clara facility and made the decision this morning.

He said "Jimmy did everything I asked him to do." Wow...

I liked Martz too, but I believe there were personality conflicts in their relationship -- Martz thought he should have been headcoach.

6. I don't know about that
Martz was responsible for JT O'Sullivan as QB. Awful, awful.
