Another reason I hate three divisions in baseball. Look at these complicated scenarios:

Giants • The San Francisco Giants (91-68) clinch the NL West and No. 2 seed with a win (if necessary, Monday in San Diego).
• The Giants clinch the wild card if the Braves are swept or a Tuesday tiebreaker in Atlanta if the Braves lose twice.

Braves’ magic number: 2

Braves • The Atlanta Braves (90-69) clinch a playoff berth with two wins, or a win and Padres loss, or two Padres losses.
• The Braves clinch a Tuesday tiebreaker in Atlanta vs. the Monday Giants-Padres loser with one win and a Padres sweep.
• The Braves clinch a Monday tiebreaker in Atlanta vs. the Padres with no wins and one Padres loss.
• The Braves are eliminated if swept and Padres sweep.

Padres control own destiny

Padres • The San Diego Padres (88-71) clinch the NL West and No. 2 seed with four wins (including Monday tiebreaker at San Diego), or three wins and Braves swept, and Reds loss.
• The Padres clinch the NL West and No. 3 seed with four wins, or three wins and Braves swept, and Reds sweep.
• The Padres clinch a Monday tiebreaker at Atlanta with two wins and three Braves losses, or Tuesday tiebreaker in Atlanta with sweep, Monday loss to Giants, and two Braves losses.
• The Padres are eliminated with a loss and a Braves win.
