It is tough in this town right now. I really think it all goes back to the owner. If someone would really field a competitive team here the fans would be out in force.
If it makes you feel any better, you should have heard all the abuse I took last week when the Royals beat up the Cards!!

8. Walmart baseball sucks. |

Let's hope the new manager works out with the youth movement.
Good series with the Cards, though. Despite the sweep.

Got to start somewhere, and the Boys in Blue did manage to take one from my Cards, not to mention the Skankees.

I think Ponson and Penn can do a good job but they are gonna need run support to win, the Red Sox are after all the defending champions and have great hitting all through out, and I'll admit it too, in full strength their pitching is better than ours, though I think if Bedard keeps up, Chen as well, and Lopez continues doing good like he has of late, and Cabrera gets more consistent, and Ponson, agh I think we should trade him.

11. Yanks are in deep shit . . . |
|
they made stupid moves in the offseason that are coming back to haunt them . . . signed two mediocre starting pitchers to ridiculous contracts, and a 40-year-old Big Unit in need of Viagra for three years to an even more ridiculous contract . . . let players like Lieber and Cairo go, and didn't stick with good young pitchers (Vasquez, Weaver) because they didn't produce NOW . . . and didn't go after Beltran, who could have been their switch-hitting center fielder for the next decade . . . (and he was willing to sign at a discount to boot) . . .
they're stuck with Giambi's absurd contract for another four or five years, and he can't play first base OR hit . . . at least Kevin Brown's absurd contract runs out after this year . . . A-Fraud leads the majors in most hitting categories but can't do shit when it counts . . . he does, however, look GREAT when he swings and misses with the bases loaded . . . (ever notice that every team he left improved dramatically the following year?) . . .
if you assembled a team of all the good young players the Yankees have traded or just let go in the past three years, you'd have one with real potential for the future . . . think Nick Johnson, Alfonso Soriano, Ted Lilly, Lieber, Cairo, Vasquez, Weaver, etc. . . in their place they have a geriatric lineup of individuals (as opposed to a team) that's W-A-A-A-A-A-Y overpaid and not producing (with a few notable exceptions like Jeter and Sheffield) . . . and it all can be laid directly at George Steinbrenner's feet . . .
prediction: the Yankees won't make the playoffs this year . . . and George will explode, and then go out and find the best mediocre players available, sign them to ridiculous contracts for the next five years, and repeat the whole process all over again . . .

Brad Halsey (included in the Randy Johnson trade):
W-L 4-2; ERA 2.98; K 39; Walks 13; WHIP 1.28
Randy Johnson:
W-L 5-3; ERA 3.99; K 58; Walks 16; WHIP 1.21
Seems like the Yankees could have saved a ton of money for pretty much the same pitcher with the exception that Brad's not old. But that's not George's way. Brad isn't a Big Name. *thud*

13. The demise of the Yankees is greatly overstated |
|
They will be in this thing to the end. Yes, they have some problems. But they also have oodles of talent. Hell, they went from being in the basement in April to most of the way back in May, and there are four months left.

16. they came back against Seattle and Oakland . . . |
|
teams they're supposed to beat . . . (they're also supposed to beat KC, btw) . . . it's when they play the good teams that they look less and less like winners . . .
unless they take the division, they likely won't make the playoffs since the wildcard will probably come from elsewhere . . . and I don't think they'll win the division with the pitching they have, and with the Sox and the Orioles as their competition . . .

14. The Yankees are never in deep shit |
|
- maybe for one season, but not long term. That is because they can afford to make high-dollar mistakes. Also they are first in line to pick up a primo free agent that cheapskate teams can't pay for. So NY throws a big contract at Hideki Irabu and it doesn't pan out - well, ship him to the Expos and try again with Godzilla. Most other teams get bogged down by a big, unproductive contract (see just about any Pittsburgh Pirate signing outside of Mesa) and sort of have their hands tied til it's off the books. Ya think the Reds are kicking themselves for signing Milton? If that was the Yanks it would be like when they signed Weaver - oh well, get rid of him and try again. Things like this are why I'm a much bigger fan of the NFL! When's football start anyway??

15. they can do that sometimes, but . . . |
|
it's hard to walk away from a Giambi, who they owe tens of millions of dollars to . . . he's also untradable, unless they want to assume 100% of his contract . . . same thing with Kevin Brown, though fortunately he's only under contract til the end of this season . . .

17. Not sure what that means, really. |
|
I mean, in some ways the NFL is more equal, and in other ways it's less so. One thing is for certain, the NFL has found new ways to milk its TV/advertising income to the point where I don't bother to watch the games anymore. Too much inaction has made the game a bore fest that lasts way too long.

Please back up your statment that the NFL is not equal?? You have to be kidding me. The NFL is the most socialist league ever!! Power to the people! Power to the small market teams!

The best teams in the NFL win a far greater percentage of their games and the worst teams lose a far greater percentage of their games than in any other sport. Second, multiple championships is the rule, rather than the exception in NFL history. See the recent Patriots string, and then look back to the Broncos and Cowboys of the 90s. The Redskins and 49ers of the 80s and on and on. In the end, the NFL parity talk is just that, mostly talk, er marketing, while the NFL becomes more boring every year, as its marketing becomes more and more unbearable, and more and more the focus of the league, rather than good competition. The NFL today is more like an Up With People show with cheerleaders, interrupted by five second snippets of actual on field action.
Of course, what's sad is that the other professional sports are following in kind for the most part -- though they do focus on keeping game time down, while the NFL seems focused on doing the opposite.

Your argument for baseball is more filled with misleading statements and outright lies than a Bush administration budget proposal.
" The best teams in the NFL win a far greater percentage of their games and the worst teams lose a far greater percentage of their games than in any other sport. " Well yah, probably true percentage wise. This is because they only play 16 freaking games a season. However, football has the socialist SALARY CAP, which gives all teams a level playing field. Only a team's management ineptitude can hold them back.
"Second, multiple championships is the rule, rather than the exception in NFL history. " .. Comeon now. You must really like baseball, because you are throwing up softballs here. The NY Yankees .. have what, 26 championships?? I don't even know what team is in 2nd place.
"The NFL today is more like an Up With People show with cheerleaders," You have a problem with hot cheerleaders???
" interrupted by five second snippets of actual on field action." Yes, no comparison to baseball, where my favorite play is the fake pickoff throw to 3rd, followed by a fake pickoff throw to 1st. Followed by the pitcher peering back to the catcher for a few minutes shaking off signs. After a while the batter calls time to collect his thoughts and scratch his balls.

What were they, a 1/2 favorite? That's considered a huge favorite in baseball even though it's the equivalent of a 4 or 4.5 point favorite in a football game. There is virtually no such thing as big upset in baseball, at least not on an indivdual game basis.
I don't follow baseball or even know who the Yankees lost to. But a thread about losing a game to a lesser team is not appropriate in that sport. My instinct is the Yankees will fine in the long run. I never tune in baseball until the playoffs and they always seem to show up.
