12. I was in Atlanta in '91 |
|
when it started. It's funny but I was at a game in late August and it was kind of innocent. Only about half the people were doing it. Up until then baseball was a pretty low priority in Atlanta.
Then this special team came with loads of homegrown stars who were as innocent as the fans. Literally, the last 2 months of that season no one in Atlanta slept. Because we were in the western conference we played a lot of games out west and people just became completely enamored with this team. We had a saying "Braves fatigue syndrome". Literally the town was a bunch of walking zombies. At that time Atlanta was only 2.4 million people. Almost anyone who wanted to go to a playoff game or World Series got tickets.
It truly was pretty special.
This started a pretty special time in Georgia. Once known as a football state, kids and parents started to play baseball all the time. We now have 2 sports at the grass root level. Football and baseball. Georgia has the 4th most players in the major leagues.
This happened because of that team in '91.
I think it was something that just happened. It was not orchestrated by the management. It came from the fans and I do not believe any harm was meant by it.
