Serbian hooligans succeed in getting Italy match called off
A group of Serbian hooligans seemed intent on ruining their side's Euro qualifier against Italy in Genoa on Tuesday. Even while the Serbian team was on the bus going to the match, hooligans were on the offense, hurling smokebombs onto the vehicle and going after goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic, who was scared into asking not to play. Stojkovic was perhaps already unsettled after his obituary was posted online by Red Star supporters following his move to Partizan Belgrade.

Once in the stadium, the madness continued. From the AP:

Before the scheduled kickoff, a few fans with their heads covered climbed up onto a partition, took out tools and began cutting through a mesh fence. Glass partitions were broken.
Police dressed in riot gear confronted the fans and eventually the teams came back out. Serbia fans whistled and booed throughout their national anthem, but the game began.

It began after a 45-minute delay where the Serbian team even tried to calm the hooligans by applauding and giving thumbs up to the away fan section, but none of that achieved anything. When the match started, flares pelted the pitch, almost hitting Italy goalkeeper Emilio Viviano, who refused to continue.
