A-Rod Finally Leads Rangers To World Series
Edited on Mon Oct-25-10 07:12 AM by TZ
ARLINGTON, TX—Ten years after signing a record $252 million contract to play baseball in Texas, third baseman Alex Rodriguez finally delivered for the Rangers by leading the franchise to its first-ever World Series. "A-Rod came up big for us this entire series, all the way up until the last out," Rangers manager Ron Washington told reporters during a postgame press conference, saying that the Rangers would have had no chance of beating the New York Yankees without Rodriguez's remarkable performance at the plate

3. I believe that the Rangers are still paying part of his contract.
Ten years now?

5. Not anymore, I believe...
A-rod opted out of his enormous deal after the '07 season, only to get an even bigger one from the Yankees. When that contract ended, I think the Rangers were off the hook.

6. A-Roid was owed back salary in August.
According to Wiki:

As the stalemate between HSG and its creditors continued, on May 24, 2010 the Texas Rangers filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.<23><24> As of that date, the Rangers and HSG had an estimated debt of $575 million.<24> Much of the unsecured debt was owed in back salary. Officially, New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez topped the list of unsecured creditors with an estimated $24.9 million owed by the Rangers.<24> Additionally, the Rangers also owed Baltimore Orioles pitcher Kevin Millwood $12.9 million, and current Rangers third baseman Michael Young $3.9 million.<24> At a press conference, the Greenberg-Ryan group proposed to buy the team for $575 million.<24> The sale would repay all the team’s creditors, including players owed back salary.<24>

9. I didn't realize they still owed him back salary.
I just knew they weren't paying a percentage anymore when he got out of that deal. I'm a little surprised they still owed Millwood that much in back salary. I guess it's still better than the Mets deal with Bonilla. In 2000, the Mets decided rather than just paying him the remaining 5.9 million dollars, they would instead pay him $1.2 million EACH YEAR from 2011 to 2035. Another brilliant Steve Phillips decision.
