Pat Burrell resigns with the Giants

Pat Burrell got his wish much earlier than expected, as he and the Giants agreed Wednesday on a one-year contract.

General manager Brian Sabean had hinted that Burrell likely would have to wait until they addressed other priorities before they'd explore the possibility of re-signing him. But an industry source confirmed Wednesday night that Burrell, 34, would return to San Francisco.

Signed to a Minor League contract on May 29 after Tampa Bay released him, Burrell hit .266 in 96 games for the Giants while collecting 18 home runs and 51 RBIs. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, his home run total was the highest by a Giants player who performed for another team earlier in the season.

Burrell also proved valuable with his patience, as he led the team by averaging 4.22 pitches per plate appearance.

Great news. Burrell had a rough World Series, but he was a big part of the Giants resurgence in the second half of the year.
