Can anyone think of a terrorist attack at an international sporting event since Atlanta 96?
I am fed up with idiots (not on this board) commenting that the Qatar World Cup is the "Taliban's dream come true".

I just don't want to be wrong for pointing out that the Atlanta Olympic bombing was the last terrorist attack at an international sporting event.

Am I forgetting something?

1. There was the gun attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team in Pakistan in 2009
Gunmen shoot Sri Lanka cricketers

Gunmen have attacked a bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team on its way to play in the Pakistani city of Lahore.

At least six policemen escorting the team bus were killed, along with a driver. Seven cricketers and an assistant coach were injured.

Pakistani officials said about 12 gunmen were involved and grenades and rocket launchers have been recovered.

I don't think any country has come to Pakistan to play cricket since - Pakistan had to play their 2010 series against Australia, which should have been at home, in England instead.

4. The Dakar Rally Was Cancelled in 2008 because of a supposed terrorist threat.

A bomb went off outside of the Karachi hotel where the New Zealand cricket team was staying in 2002. (Apparently, Australia refuses to let its cricket team play in Pakistan.) NZ team members escaped harm, but 14 were killed, including the team's physiotherapist.

Also, in 2008, a suicide bomber detonated a bomb at the start of a marathon in Sri Lanka, killing 12, including "Olympic marathon runner KA Karunaratne and the national athletics coach, Lakshman de Alwis."

5. The chance of an attack there are very real
You would be an idiot to overlook it. Qatar's secret service has ties with Al Qaeda.

6. Which is why they're safe.
They aren't going to let Al Qaeda piss in their own punchbowl. I hope.
