Boston Red Sox near deal for Adrian Gonzalez of San Diego Padres, sources say
The San Diego Padres were close to finalizing a deal Saturday morning that would send slugger Adrian Gonzalez to the Boston Red Sox, according to sources.

The Padres would not receive any established major league players in the trade, and it's likely the Red Sox would include their top pitching prospect, Casey Kelly, in the trade.

(sorry not any more info than that at the moment)

1. Did you see where the Sox made an offer to Rivera, and they would
have released Papelbon had it happened?

5. Couple years ago..
there was talk of the Giants pursuing Adrian Gonzales. Supposedly though the Padres wanted too much in the way of pitching, particularly to trade him to a division rival. Now of course I'm glad nothing ever went down, if indeed the talks were ever serious or even took place. You know how rumors of trades are.

If Gonzales can hit in Petco, he should put up monster numbers at Fenway. Great deal for everyone in the NL West too..

6. I thought the same thing too
about NL west. First thing I thought was good news for the Rockies.

I'm curious as to who San Diego gets in return if this deal goes through. Even if it is just prospects, they could turn out to be really good in a couple of years.

7. It's a deal.
http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/mlb/news/story?id=5882356

UPDATE, 10:52 a.m.: We can now confirm, via Major League sources, that the package will include Kelly, Rizzo and Fuentes.

That's two former first-round picks and three players with tremendous upside.

Kelly wrote this on Twitter: "Just waking up beautiful day in Sarasota about to get some breakfast. Can't worry about things out of your control."

He's a big loss, a potential No. 2 starter with great makeup.

Keep this in mind, however: The Red Sox will gain five draft picks in a deep 2011 draft as free-agent compensation. They will get two picks for Victor Martinez, two for Adrian Beltre and one for Felipe Lopez in addition to their own.

I like it - Youk back to third, most likely.:applause:

9. 5 picks in the first 50, IIRC.
So yeah, they're losing some future potential but they're gaining a lot of future potential. They've also got a LOT of key players locked up for the next 4 seasons or so.

And Youk is back to 3rd, definitely.

I'm loving this!

10. A good deal for the Sox if they can lock up Gonzalez,
Kelly is a great prospect, but still a little way away from the bigs, and might have a tough time cracking the rotation with Beckett and Lackey locked up for a while and Lester and Buchholtz pitching great a lower money. With Gonzalez on the team, Rizzo's progress would be blocked at 1B. Fuentes is a CF, and if Ellsbury comes back to be the player he was in '09, his progress would be blocked as well.
