Nats sign Jason Werth
Edited on Sun Dec-05-10 05:09 PM by Kingofalldems
As per MLBN--- 7 yrs. 126 million. Excellent, takes a little bit of the sting off losing Adam Dunn.

1. Way more than he's "Werth"
but in Nats position, they had to significantly overpay him to get him. I'm not "on board" with them yet, but they certainly seem to be making the sort of moves a team with "a plan" would make, as opposed to going the Pirates route of "planned futility".

2. They are players now for Cliff Lee
The Nats know they will likely have to overspend to get him or others to come on board. They afterall bid the highest for Mark Teixera but lost him. However they have a pretty string core of young talent and a nice farm system going, which they did not have when they moved here. Adding good talent in FA is phase 2 of their plan to compete. It might not work (see the Mets) but I think it's got a good shot-and let's be clear- the Lerners are very wealthy and can afford a few big salaries. And - this town WILL support a winning team, as the draw for Strasburg showed. I think they are on the right track. And while 2011 might not be the year they break through, I think the days of being a bad joke are behind them. No one now can doubt they are trying.

3. The Werth signing opened up the door
for more players to come here. I would love to see them snatch one from the evil Yankees.
