Holyfield: 'I just believe that I can'...
Yes Evander Holyfield is planning another comeback...

Evander Holyfield's resume includes a bronze medal at the 1984 Olympics and victories over all-time greats like Mike Tyson (twice), Riddick Bowe, George Foreman and Larry Holmes. He is the only four-time heavyweight champion in history. A little more than a decade ago, he was one of the 10 most famous athletes on the planet.

So what's he doing fighting at a West Virginia casino Saturday night against someone named Sherman "The Tank" Williams?

Holyfield, 48, wants to end his career as the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, keeping a promise he made to himself after losing the WBA, WBC and IBF belts to Bowe in November 1992. Most boxing insiders dismiss his quest as quixotic at best, but it's hard to blame him for blocking out the Cassandra cries. Fact is, if Holyfield paid attention to critics, his career would have never gotten off the ground -- let alone reached the stratospheric heights he occupied throughout most of the 1990s.

Consider all the smart people Holyfield has proven wrong throughout his panoramic 27-year pro career. They were sure he couldn't pack enough bulk on his cruiserweight's frame to contend at heavyweight. (Oops.) They were positive he was too small to win a title in a weight class dominated by Tyson. (Whoops.) They feared for his life when he finally met Iron Mike in 1996 as an 18-to-1 underdog. (Uh-huh.)

1. I hope that
no one buys his PPV fight tonight. I have mixed feelings about his career -- I strongly oppose the use of steroids in boxing, yet I admire much of what Evander did years ago. In his younger days, I think he would have taken either Klitschko brother apart. But those days seem long gone.

(A friend was in the gym with him earlier this week. He sent me some photos of him training with Evander. He said that Holyfield looked surprisingly good to him. But I still think he needs to quit.)

2. That fight was sad.

I remember watching Holyfield fights in high school in the 80's. He's over 10 years past the point where he should have retired (or stayed retired).

3. It's sad that
promoters will continue to use him, so long as people pay to see Evander fight. I remember a poster from the 1960s: "What if they had a war, and nobody came?" (or something similar). That's what needs to happen if promoters continue to use him.

4. sadly, this reminds me of a classic Cossell quote...
It was from Howard's radio show in the early 80's. He was mentioning a fight that was going to take place for the Canadian Heavyweight Championship between George Chuvalo...and some other Canadian(who can remember at this point).

Anyway...Cossell summed up his show that evening with the following line with a hint of disdain in his voice ...commenting on Chuvalo's manager Irv Ungerman.....

"...there is one thing that you can be sure of, George Chuvalo will be fighting as long as Irving Ungerman can stand up".

5. Right!
One of my favorites was, after stopping Chuck Wepner, a reporter asked Sonny Liston if he was the bravest man he ever met? Liston said, "No. His manager is."
