I quit
Edited on Sat Jun-11-05 10:40 PM by ls317
WASHINGTON – Mike Tyson's career might have ended in shocking fashion Saturday night when he quit on the stool after taking a beating in a foul-filled sixth round against unheralded Kevin McBride.

Tyson lost for the third time in his last four fights, and once again he faded badly as the rounds went on before head butting McBride in a desperate attempt to end the fight in the sixth round.

"I can still get in shape but I don't think I have the fight and guts anymore," former undisputed heavyweight champion Tyson told Showtime PPV after the bout, while a chorus of boos filled the MCI Center.

"I don't have the stomach for this no more. I most likely won't fight again. I'm not going to disrespect the sport by losing to this caliber of fighter. I'm sorry to disappoint. I wish there was some way the fans could get some of their money back."

1. Damn
I watched the fight among several friends, Tyson was having a very tough fight against the guy. Plus he outweighted Tyson by 40 plus lbs.
Personally I think this is the end for him as a boxer, hopefully he can get the help that he needs to attempt to live some what of a normal life.

16. That's not what he meant.
He was referring to Mike Tyson's quote, something along the lines of he disgraced the sport of boxing by losing to that caliber of fighter, which is a pretty asshole-ish statement on the part of Mike Tyson.

17. That's not what Tyson said.
So while I agree it's a pretty "asshole-ish" statement, it doesn't belong to Tyson.

10. I Still Recall Howard Cosell....
...who at one time enjoyed boxing, covered it, including the Olympics, testifying to Congress as to why Boxing should be banned.

11. Perhaps congress should be banned.
Cosell was a good man, and he was disgusted with the vultures who promoted mismatches.

9. Yup, that's Mike ...

"I'm not going to disrespect the sport by losing to this caliber of fighter."

An asshole unto the end. He has and shows no respect to anyone or anything. I'm actually rather appalled he's allowed to box at all after the crap he's pulled.

He has as much right to do what he wants as you do to live your life.

19. Excuse me ...

Do you have something to say? If so, say it. This thinly veiled sarcasm you're throwing about at everyone is rather obnoxious, yet for the life of me, I haven't seen any substantive statement from you on this.

So, for the moment, let me turn this around. If you don't like criticisms of Mike Tyson, don't read them.

20. He had something substantive to say to me.
In a prior thread he seemed to say that anyone who didn't like Tyson was a racist.

21. Why would anyone pay to watch this fight?
I mean really, why? You can pay $50 to watch Tyson quit or you can pay nothing to watch Cotto/Abdulaev on HBO. BTW, the Cotto fight was vastly superior to the Tyson fight.
