What??? Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg to resign
The stunning development that Chuck Greenberg will resign as CEO and managing partner of the Texas Rangers has been a work-in-progress for months, even though he might not have fully known that he was stepping on toes within the organization and the ownership group.

An announcement that he is leaving the organization could come today.

Sources have indicated there was no one tipping point that took the relationship between Greenberg and the ownership group beyond repair. Instead, there was an accumulation of missteps that caused disharmony in an organization that appeared to have found normalcy after going through the bankruptcy-ravaged end to the Tom Hicks ownership era.

The problems date to late last season, shortly after Rangers Baseball Express was approved as owners Aug. 12. According to sources, members of the Atlanta organization weren’t pleased with how Greenberg shifted the Rangers’ High-A affiliated to Myrtle Beach, one of the minor-league clubs he owns that had long been associated with the Braves. Their discontent reached the Commissioner’s office at MLB headquarters in New York.

1. "Jerry hiring Switzer, Deion renouncing fornication and Terrell Owens taking "too many pills."
What a great line!

By Gil LeBreton

In the annals of Local Awkward Sports News Conferences, it was right up there with Jerry hiring Switzer, Deion renouncing fornication and Terrell Owens taking "too many pills."

Yes, that awkward.

The hastily summoned news conference Friday at The Ballpark was supposed to explain, we thought, why Chuck Greenberg was suddenly no longer the chief executive officer of the Texas Rangers.

Instead, the three participants -- club co-chairmen Ray Davis and Bob Simpson and team president Nolan Ryan -- offered no specifics and confined themselves to restrained farewells.

Not that we expected any of them to throw Greenberg under the team bus. But just the fact that Davis and Simpson were there in front of the cameras and notepads, after seven months of self-imposed public camouflage -- and with the clearly uncomfortable Ryan squeezed into the middle -- made for a most unusual show....
