When I was a punk ass college boy at UK in '70's I went to Frankfort with some pals to see this guy play at Kentucky State. What a difference from UK's classic Memorial Col. to go to this small packed gym with reefer smoke in the air and the pep band playing Purple Haze. Our Coach the great Adolph Rupp and the Kentucky State University basketball coach Lucias T. Mitchell, who led the Thorobreds to three straight NAIA national titles (1970-72). Time for me to learn new things
I saw some of these games and K State was better than UK
Grant upped the credibility of his three-time national champion Thorobreds by calling them "the best basketball team in Kentucky" in the early '70s. Grant alleges he and his crew could play with any team in the state, including the University of Kentucky. And they frequently did.
"Sometimes, on Sundays, we'd make the trip over to Lexington to play some pickup games there in their rec center. There was no question that we were the better team," he said.
Rupp is long gone and Coach Mitchell died last year. This post was not just about Travis but a vignette of a time past.
TRAVIS GRANT: Travis Grant played for Kentucky State form 1968-1972 and led the team to three consecutive NAIA National Championships (1970-1972). Grant finished his career as one of the most accomplished collegiate basketball players, at any level, of all-time. Grant walked out of Kentucky Sate as a three time National Champion, two-time tournament MVP, and the all-time leading scorer in the history of college basketball. At the end of his senior year, Grant received the Lapchick Award as the Sporting News College Player of the Year. He is a member of the Kentucky State, the State of Kentucky and the College Basketball Halls of Fame. Grant was a first round pick of the Los Angeles Lakers in 1972 and played professionally in the NBA and ABA from 1972-1976.
