To hell with Mike Tyson! It's time for a real fight...Tarver/Johnson 2. |
|
We have a big rematch this Saturday night between Antonio Tarver and Glencoffe Johnson. In the first fight Johnson won a close decision. I heard on ESPNews the other day that Tarver was distracted in the first fight, that he let the glow of his victory over Roy Jones, Jr. prevent him from fighting his best. This is a classical excuse for a fighter who lost a close fight. I believe that it doesn't matter if Tarver take this fight seriously, I still believe that Glen Johnson will win.
Anyone else have an opinion on this fight?

and I still had Tarver ahead by two rounds even though it was close. If neither guy finds some magical KO power to beat the other with, I would suspect this fight will be a close decision as well.

2. It's a pretty even match-up. |
|
Tarver's excuse about being distracted is not impressive. As a person who had been somewhat locked out of the big time for years, he certainly should have appreciated what he had. I would expect that he has a good chance of pulling out a decision in this fight. Then comes the rubber match. Closely contested series are a good thing for the sport.
It is also easy to see Johnson improving off of the first fight. I find him one of the most decent men in the sport. He has a quiet self-confidence that boxing fans appreciate. The higher his profile, the better for boxing.

3. I thought Tarver won the first fight... |
|
He outthrew, outlanded and outboxed Johnson, but still came up with the shitty end of the stick...
I think that Tarver will knock Johnson out this time, however, to avoid another bogus outcome. Johnson, remember, has LOST A LOT OF FIGHTS since he fought Hopkins...
I wonder if Johnson loses this one, will they have a rubber? It couldn't be like Ward-Gatti, but it would be entertaining, that's for sure!!!

Tarver did not get robbed! The first fight could have gone either way. That's how I saw it. I thought Johnson did just enough to win.

respected pundits who thought it was a bad decision. I've heard nothing but praise for Johnson.

6. Tarver wins a decision. |
|
He was a little too fast, and far to active, for Johnson. A third fight should be interesting.

Tarver beat Glen to the punch for most of the rounds. I had on my scorecard 116-114 for Tarver. Tarver just threw more and landed more. Tarver threw 800+ punches! Light-heavyweights usually don't do that. I also like how Glen congratulated Tarver and stated that Tarver won the fight. Very classy move. Boxing could use more of Glen Johnson's class. I hope there is a third fight. I would really like to see what adjustments Glen makes in response to how Tarver fought tonight.
