Go Kentucky, why did the bookies make the 4 seed a
one point favorite over the 2 seed.

Because the NCAA sucks at their job. If UK prevails and wins the title,it will have been the hardest bracket in my memory.

1. I concur that the NCAA sucks at their job.
That will probably be the only thing we agree about today.

11. Las Vegas odds are strictly power ratings
Edited on Sun Mar-27-11 11:11 PM by Awsi Dooger
That's all there is to it, nothing magical and not based on feel. Adjusted by home court, if any.

Kentucky has had a higher power rating than North Carolina all year. Many teams who did not get selected for the tournament were rated markedly higher than teams with decent seeding. It's hardly the top 64 or 68 teams.

At this point the oddsmakers have access to more sets of respected power ratings than ever before. Right now the numbers the sharp bettors pay attention to are Ken Pomeroy at Kenpom.com. He tracks everything, from pace to rebounds to proficiency.

The betting lines always move in Pomeroy's direction these days. If his numbers estimate Kansas to win 80-64, and the line is -12 and the total is 151, the spread will go up and the total will go down. Eventually everything starts to mirror Pomeroy's number.

I don't use it for betting purposes. My college basketball systems are excellent. But it certainly tells you which direction the line will move. If I like the team Pomeroy opposes I'll wait for the line to move in my favor in the late going.
