Indians drop second straight to White Sox

CLEVELAND (AP)—From optimism to emptiness in one day.

The Cleveland Indians are off to the start they couldn’t afford.

Playing before the smallest home crowd in 18 seasons, they dropped to 0-2 on Saturday following an 8-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox, who battered Cleveland’s starting pitcher for the second straight day and knocked whatever hope Indians fans carried into 2011.

Only 9,853 fans—the fewest since Progressive Field opened in 1994— witnessed the Indians losing to the White Sox for the eighth time in nine games....

3. Quicken Loans Arena? Sounds like a scam.
From Wiki:

Progressive Field is a ballpark located in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, and is the home of the Cleveland Indians of the American League. Along with Quicken Loans Arena, it is part of the Gateway Sports and Entertainment Complex. It was ranked as Major League Baseball's best ballpark in a 2008 Sports Illustrated fan poll.

The ballpark is informally referred to as The Jake, based on its original name, Jacobs Field (after former team owners Richard and David Jacobs). It was known by that name since its inaugural season in 1994, until it was changed to Progressive Field before opening day 2008.

8. A bad product is hard to sell...

I'm sure fans are disgusted. I am. Time and time again we've seen Cy Young winners and other team favorites traded away because they couldn't be resigned as free agents. Sabathia. Lee. Thome. Ramirez. Martinez. Vizquel. It's like the early 1970's all over again. A player puts up good numbers for a few years then is traded away because the owner can't afford to pay them more.

Cleveland will support good/competitive teams. Remember the 455 consecutive sell-outs from 1995-2001.

And why they schedule games in Cleveland in early April is beyond me. They should start on the road in warmer weather cities. Cleveland can be brutal in early April.

9. Sunday: Cleveland beats the White Sox in front of 36,473...

empty seats.

Paid attendance: 8,726 -- worse than Saturday.

Too bad. Cleveland won 7-1. Sounds like a fine performance by starter Justin Masterson, and the game included the first triple play of the season.

11. What a disgrace. They shouldn't be playing baseball in Colorado in April.

12. There are four warm weather teams in that division

the Rockies could have played on the road. Maybe I shouldn't complain... it'll make it harder on them later in the season.
