has anyone noticed that the Yankees suck SO bad that . . .
it's not even worth posting about anymore . . . present post excepted, of course . . .

seriously, it's beginning to look like the Bombers are a legitimate .500 team . . . the one thing they tried to fix during the offseason was pitching, and their moves have blown up in their faces . . . particularly since they won over a hundred games last year with the pitchers they had! . . .

- signing a 40-year-old pitcher for three years at $16 mil per? . . . ridiculous! . . .

- signing Pavano -- a journeyman at best -- for four years at $10 mil per? . . . absurd! . . .

- signing Wright for ANY amount of money? . . . dumb! . . .

- trading for Kevin Brown (though it happened a year ago) . . . insane! . . .

- letting virtually ALL of their young talent go in exchange for high profile resumes? . . . short-sighted at best . . .

- failing to sign Pedro and Carlos Beltran, both of whom wanted to play in the Bronx? . . . duh! . . .

with Johnson's back now acting up, the guy they brought in as their stopper isn't intimidating anyone . . . and there's a good chance he'll be joining Wright and Brown on the DL sooner rather than later . . . which leaves them with Mussina, Pavano, Wang and who knows? . . . not exactly a championship caliber group of starters . . .

this team is going nowhere fast . . . chances are good that the second half will be no better than the first, and that they'll miss the playoffs for the first time in years . . .

George is not a happy camper, methinks . . .

2. Hate to say it but
I think you're right.
It really all begins and ends with their pitching staff.

They should have resigned El Duque and Lieber and they should have brought back Wells. Can't fault them for signing Johnson, who knew he'd stink once he got to the Yankees and it seemed like a toss-up between him and Pedro. Turns out Pedro is doing great and Johnson is not. Since when does Pedro go 8 or 9 innings.

I doubt they'll make the playoffs this year.

After last years stunning loss to Boston in the playoffs, who knows, anything's possible.

3. I'm no Yankee Fan but . . .
I wouldn't count them out yet. The season is less than half over and they are only 6 1/2 out of first and 5 out of the wild card. And they have the ability to go out and get players.

Everybody wanted Pavano, including Theo Epstein.

Pedro and Beltran wanted to play for whoever paid the most. George needs the cash to build his new stadium so he does not have unlimited funds.

They didn't have much young talent to let go. Nick Johnson, Vasquez, et al are not exactly burning up the league.

7. George definitely is not happy...

How is signing RJ a bad move but failing to sign Pedro was a bad move? Both pitchers came with question marks, Pedro probably more than RJ. As astonishingly mediorce RJ has been, Pedro has hooked up to the rejuvenation machine.

Pavano was the young stud in the NL, I was happy when we got him. I'm of course disappointed but I;m willing to wait and see.

Wright was cheap but unecessary

I hated the Brown trade.

What young talent was traded this year as opposed to others? Hated losing Soriano but we got A-rod. Just plain hated losing Nick Johnson.

What's Beltran hitting these days? How long till he pulls his hammy again?

10. A-Rod a great player but no 3rd baseman
God he is awful at 3rd, embarrassingly bad.

11. Not really....
I've certainly seen worse.

What really kills the Yankees is when Giambi is playing first.

13. Are you kidding? Brocious, Boggs 100 times better
I am not putting down A-Rod as a fielder. He was great at SS, but at 3rd he constantly backs up on the ball and does not have the quick reflexes you'd expect from a 3rd baseman. True, not as bad as Giami, no one could be, but certainly not a sound 3rd baseman.

9. Basically all true
but Pedro was a .500 pitcher against the Yankees and the past 2 years sure didn't look like this year's version of Pedro. Hell, they could have kept Pettite for a lot less than they are paying these bums.

I think more than the pitchers it is the defense killing them. A-Rod is no 3rd baseman, the entire outfield sucks defensively and Giambi plays first base like he has no glove.

The real good Yankee teams under Torre always had sparkling defense. Broscius at 3rd and Tino at first, argh, no comparison to these old men they are putting out there now. OK, Tino is back, but 5 years older, still a great defensive player but a slow bat now. The answer is in Washington - Nick Johnson, their 1st baseman of the future, who they let get away and now is MVP material.

I am very afraid they will trade Wang and Cano for the quick "fix". They are their future.

12. Nick Johnson
It was a mistake to let him go. They're always looking for the quick fix and it hasn't been working. And they better keep Wang & Cano.

17. Add Nick Johnson...
to the list of talented young players the Yankees traded away in favor of older players who turn out to be disappointments. Johnson, Soriano, Brazoban, etc.

15. All this and they're still only 6.5 out...
Remember the Red Sox and Astros of last year, people - the regular season still lasts through September. There's a lot of baseball still to be played.

right you are . . . unfortunately, what the Yankees are playing has little resemblance to that particular game . . .
