The Bottom Line

When the Patriots' offense goes to an empty backfield and five wide, they could trot out two of the fastest receivers in the league in Bethel Johnson and newly acquired (Browns) Andre' Davis, perennial postseason performers Deion Branch and David Givens, and tight end Ben Watson, who has speed in the 4.5-range and a 40-inch vertical leap. That's tough to cover. And that's just one reason why it's difficult to doubt the Patriots as they pursue a fourth title in five years.

Even with all of their offseason losses, they might field their best team yet in 2005. Besides receiver, they're deeper in the secondary; last season, New England used receiver Troy Brown at the nickel, but it has more depth now at corner with Chad Scott, Duane Starks, and promising rookie Ellis Hobbs III. First-rounder Logan Mankins is an upgrade over the departed Joe Andruzzi in terms of athleticism at left guard. In camp, Corey Dillon looked like he was ready to run for 2,000 yards.

The Patriots will coordinate the offense by committee, and defensive coordinator Eric Mangini doesn't have Romeo Crennel's vast experience, but with Bill Belichick around, the one thing we know is that this team is all set on the coaching end. Patriots fans wait anxiously while Chad Brown and Monty Beisel try to fit into the shoes worn by Ted Johnson, Tedy Bruschi, and Roman Phifer at inside linebacker. But barring injury, it's a safe bet the Patriots will be getting fitted for more rings come February.

1. they are very good
but nothing is a safe bet. Everyone assumed SF would threepeat in 90. That didn't happen either.
