HORSE RACING news & results weekend of September 3rd
From The Bloodhorse:
Mass Media Wears Down Battle Won to Upset Forego

Sent off at 14-1 odds, surprising Mass Media wore down Battle Won in the stretch to post a game victory in Saturday's grade I Forego Stakes at Saratoga.

Ridden by Javier Castellano for Hall of Famer Bobby Frankel, Mass Media was settled into the middle of the field as Yankee Mon and Battle Won contested the early pace in fractions of :22 1/4 and :44 4/5. Mass Media made his move rounding the turn in the seven furlong test and resolutely wore down the leaders.

Forest Danger, the 11-10 favorite in the six-horse field, finished fifth. The final time for seven furlongs was 1:22.59.

1. Vivid Photo takes and re-takes records to win
From USTA website:
DuQuoin (IL) - Vivid Photo and trainer/driver/co-owner Roger Hammer made quick work of winning the $525,000 World Trotting Derby on Saturday afternoon at the DuQuoin, Illinois State Fair. The race calls for a horse to win two heats in order to be declared the winner of the event. The race sometimes goes to a third and deciding heat, but there was no need for that this year as Vivid Photo won the first and second heat to decide the question. He broke his own world record for three-year-old trotting geldings of 1:52.3 by taking the first heat in 1:51.3, and then broke that record again an hour later in the second heat with a win in 1:51.2.

2. Eclipse DNA to be studied in Britain
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4216914.stm

Eclipse, the stallion described as the greatest racehorse of all time, is to have his DNA studied by scientists.

The team, from the Royal Veterinary College and Cambridge University, hope to get an insight into what made him such a great champion.

Eclipse was never beaten when he ran in 1769 and 1770 and was retired largely because of the lack of competition.

It was his prowess on the track that gave rise to the famous phrase, "Eclipse first, the rest nowhere".

3. Did your horse come out ok, Old Broad?
I thought he performed very well, considering his last was an allowance and then jumped up to a graded stakes. He wasn't far back, it seemed like a blanket finish for those behind the first two finishers.

Those two really dug in.

4. He was makng a bad noise when he came back
to be unsaddled. He runs in a figure eight, but it looks like he
needs his tongue tied down too.

And that was probably too far for him. We thought he'd like that
distance but he seems to not want to go farther than 1 1/16.

6. It never happened to him before.
He came out of the race in good shape though. I got on him
this morning and he seemed happy and legs felt good. So he'll
live to fight another day.
