Who are the MOST ANNOYING College Football fans out there?

As a life-long Gator fan, I have to say that Canes fans are the worst. Most SEC teams' fans are pretty good when it comes to tailgating before and after the game. You can go up, have a beer, talk some football, and enjoy each other's company yet still be rivals. Even Tennessee and and (gasp!) Florida State fans are usually hospitable on Saturdays. However, that is not the case with Hurricanes fans. They are, for the most part, rude, obnoxious, mean-spirited people. I don't understand because I am from south Florida and usually love people from there. Canes' fans are different. I know not all of them are bad people, it just seems like most of them to me.

1. Well, you're not going to like my response

I'm a lifelong Canes fan, but one who went to USC. So I've experienced fan bases on both coasts, plus many games in the heartland. Without question, Gator fans are the ultimate lowlife crowd. I have never experienced utter criminal behavior anywhere besides Gainesville.

Even before the Gators heroically dropped us from the schedule, my family and I decided never to make the trip to Gainesville again. We have had our tires slashed, our antenna bent, a pennant literally ripped from my younger sister's hand and broken in half, and little frisbees intentionally thrown at our faces from close range. Not to mention basic simpleton profanity, launched without provocation or reason.

And it's hardly limited to anti-Miami behavior. In '82 I traveled to Gainesville with a friend of mine while covering the 'SC/Florida game for the Daily Trojan student newspaper. The night before the game we ate pizza at a spot just off campus, wearing our USC shirts. A large table of Florida students saw us and began the orange and blue chant with the chomp. No problem there, we enjoyed it. My friend Paul from California was not familiar with that ritual. But one blond obnoxious drunk from the Gator table apparently didn't appreciate our smiles. He walked over to our table and in the ultimate classy and manly maneuver of all time, he picked up our pizza and dumped it over onto the floor. His tablemates roared in appproval. That stunt basically summed up everything I ever learned about Gator fans. My friend Paul to this day agrees Florida fans were the worst he ever encountered.

I can sit in the stands with FSU fans and enjoy the game. In fact, during the 2004 opener in the Orange Bowl I had a ticket in the upper deck immediately adjacent to the FSU section. We talked football the entire game and shook hands amicably at the conclusion, even though it had been a devastating OT loss for FSU after leading the entire game. I can't fathom anything similar with Gator fans. They take their pathetic act on the road. As a kid I witnessed the infamous Great Gator Flop in '71. Other years Florida fans routinely abused the Orange Bowl beer policy, causing it to be changed. In 2003 after Miami completed a miracle 38-33 comeback win, which I attended, my family and I intentionally altered our route back to the car because upset and disorderly Gator fans were causing problems at our typical route.

Last summer I visited Tennessee and was sampling the little tacky shops in Gatlinburg. When I walked into a sports-oriented store flush with collegiate attire, the manager and his son were talking about how much they despised the Gators. I laughed and joined in agreement. The son shook my hand. "Man, they're the worst, aren't they. Nobody seems to like 'em."

8. Sorry about your experiences

I have rarely seen such occurrences happen in my years going to UF football games. Alas, a few of those acts you mentioned were before I could even walk so I cannot speak about our fans back then. The only violent act I can recall was between a few guys (in a frat, I think, and very drunk) and some UT students two years ago. Other than that, I've seen very few problems, except for the occassional drunk person.

I've only been to a handful of games away from Gainesville, and every time we have gotten along with our tailgating neighbors and those we've sat next to. A few of them seemed wary at first, but they came along after a few minutes. I have never seen troubles with any Florida fans on those occasions.

Alcohol is always going to be a problem, especially with the student body. Don't get me wrong, I love to tailgate and enjoy the game with a few beers in me, but attitudes towards alcohol need to be changed with many schools. I applaud the UF president's efforts to curb the "party school" mentality that was rampant a decade ago.

The reason I pointed to Canes fans, is their general attitude toawards football. Many of the ones I have met treat the game less as a sport and rivalry, and more like a personal vendetta. They take smack talking and make it personal. I am talking about the younger fans. The older fans and alumni seem to put it all in perspective and treat it as a game as it should be treated.

When Miami came up to Gainesville three or four years back, our tailgating group was accosted twice by two different groups of what I would assume to be Miami students. The second group caught the attention of a few campus police and luckily, they put a stop to the situation before it got too far out of hand.

On a side note: Our team's effort is EMBARRASSING, right now. Thank god I decided to stay in to watch the game. Now, I can get some work done.

But the worst, at least in this past decade, are Mountaineer fans...the urine and garbage tossers. I'm so thankful we don't play them any more. Generally I don't have much of a beef with the University (OU), its players, its coaches or its fans - but I really do think the symbolism of the Sooner mascot is highly inappropriate. It never ceases to amaze me that so many Okies are so proud of their land run boomer sooner heritage. Most are not ignorant of it - they simply think it is no big deal. This is the same logic that justifies Senator Frist's insider trading - he acted before he was legally allowed to do so to his financial advantage. This is not behavior that should be honored or glorified.

Edit to add: I don't doubt that the influx of Texans hurt this state. Shrubbie is proof enough.

6. I don't think one should make something political about it

It has pretty much lost it's meaning over the years. As a former Oklahoma history teacher ( high school) I don't think there is much "pride" in it. It's just a romantic version of things like Pirates and Buccaneers and Outlaws.
I don't think mascots should be given all that much worry. I love the Gamecocks, and well, I mean a Razorback is a big ol' hog.

9. It most certainly carried a political meaning when it was adopted

This state isn't that old. Oklahoma was the 46th state to enter the union in 1907. In the scheme of things it really hasn't been that long since the Oklahoma land run in 1889. The last of the landruns was the Kickapoo opening of 1895. The Sooner nickname originated in 1908 - less than thirteen years after the last Oklahoma land run. I'm sure when that nickname was adopted many if not most were well aware of what it represented.

So while fans today may not ascribe any political meaning to the nickname they would do well to consider its history. That nickname most certainly carried a political meaning at the time it was adopted. I find it repugnant. It is not a proud history and it does not represent a high standard or achievement. It is an arrogant flaunting of lawlessness in the name of greed and personal gain at the expense of another.

When my husband was in Longhorn band in the mid-70s, they had to have a police escort out of the stadium because of the Razorback fans throwing things and trying to steal their hats. But that has been a few years and they are no longer rivals since Arkansas left the SWC.

Don't know about attitude of fans. I was there 75-79. I found us to be quite quaint up there in the Hills except when the Longhorns came to town. I recall a home game when if the Hogs won they were going to the Orange Bowl (77 season, 78 Orange Bowl). Late in the fourth quarter Oranges were flying out of the stands. After the game Lou Holtz said he was glad we weren't going to the Gator Bowl.

Maybe a Sooner fan would like to tell us about that 78 Orange Bowl.

Youngstown State-GREAT people. They and Marshall battled it out many time in the 90's and they were always happy and friendly in the tailgating area in Huntington and reciprocated it in Youngstown.

Miami of Ohio - Nasty nasty nasty people. There is a long history of hate between the two schools going back to before the plane crash. They are just plain nasty.

Va. Tech- Terrible. Just terrible. My buddies and me went to this one too (road trip) right before my wedding. The VT fans went out of their way to come over to MU fans and scream obscenities and try to snatch pennants and such. After the game (Leftwich was QB then) in which Tech got some huge breaks to win the Tech fans (many I knew) were oblivious to what had happened "Oh! NEver in doubt. Had it in the bag all the way!!" Tech fans are like Neuvo NASCAR fans. Johnny come latelies. These aren't the "redneck" folks either these are the engineering school types.

Ohio State- my relatives tell me they were great. Came over, shook hands, wished luck and after a very close game came back over to express their respect and talk about a great game.

WVU- drunken a--holes. PERIOD.


Penn State- Great folks. They played at UVa few years ago and they were all around us in a tailgating area. Big lifesize cut out of JoePa they brought with them.

I posted early in this thread. I should have emphasized the Gator fans on DU always seem terrific. Also that my experiences as a visiting fan in Gainesville span from late '60s to late '80s, when Florida dumped Miami from the schedule. I have not been back to Florida Field since, so I can't comment on the fan behavior from the outset of the Spurrier regime until today, admittedly a very long time.

However, the examples of fan atrocities in Gainesville that I mentioned in my earlier post were hardly exaggerated. Here is a section of a 2002 article from the St. Petersburg Times, detailing then-Miami coach Howard Schnellenberger's outrage at Gator fan behavior during a game in 1980. I was there. but that call came on the back of a non-reviewed play where Henne scored a TD which they did NOT review. Other than an Illinois game a few years back when there were some questionable calls on fumbles, I defy you to name a game where the refs favored Michigan. I myself remember a game a few years ago where Michigan intercepted a ball at UCLA, the ref said the Michigan player was out of bounds and told Carr "Coach, it wasn't even close", yet replay (there wasn't game replay then) showed the player was CLEARLY in bounds. Then there was the stopped clock at the State game a few years ago (Spartan Bob) and the time Desmond Howard got manhandled going for two, also in a State game, that was not called (though the ref called and apologized for that one.) And Notre Dame was awarded a phantom touchdown, I think it was two years ago, when they fumbled and didn't even cross the goal line!

They are not around when a team is struggling, but as soon as the good times roll around, there they are making the rest of us look bad.

My Iowa Hawkeyes are a good example of this. If you hear a Hawkeye fan running his mouth and putting down other teams, you can bet he wasn't with us a few years ago when we were winless in the Big Ten.

I've been to a number of away games, and the worst experience ever was in Miami, with taunting fans running up to us after the game (1986? or '87?) in a semi-threatening way as we walked back to the bus (we were fans, not players). I have seen Michigan State fans be utterly obnoxious to Michigan and Notre Dame, yet fine with everyone else. I personally have found Ohio State fans to be fine for the most part, but I know people from the Michigan band who have had to be hustled out before the game ended (in Columbus) and put on a bus because the fans were going to attack. I have seen University of Washington fans on both ends of the spectrum - either really good sports, or just terrible sports. I have heard terrible things about University of Oregon fans, but when Michigan played in Eugene (and lost) the people were just delightful to us. OTOH, there were some Ohio State fans there (yes, at a Michigan/Oregon game in Eugene) who came out with their OSU "Fuck Michigan" shirts, and the Oregon fans were astounded (one of them had a little kid with him.)

I do get tired of Michigan being on the receiving end of the Big Ten hate fest. You'd think that people could spread the hate around a little - other schools have had success, most notably Michigan State in basketball, yet no one is all over them.

But the biggest sign of an obnoxious fan is when you can't be a gracious WINNER. Everyone hates losing, but if your team wins a big game, then it's the time for you to be nice to the losers.

Oh, and let me add one consistently obnoxious fan base to the list: Duke.

My dad was an alumnus and took me to the games when I was a kid back in the 1970s before they turned into a national powerhouse. If that makes any difference.

The difference between the Miami Hurricanes and most college football teams is that they play in a very urban setting rather than a medium-sized college town. And they play in a stadium several miles off campus.

Another difference is that most of the players they recruit come from our back yard, guys that attend the local high schools. If you look at the Canes roster on any given year, you would see the bulk of the team come from either schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. And another significant portion come from the rest of Florida. And a select crop of blue chippers come from other states.

So Cane fans look at the team as "their" team even if they have never set foot on campus. So yeah, It's a Canes thing.

Another fact is that the University of Miami is very small and expensive compared to other universities. It's a private university. I believe they have a total student enrollment of about 12,000 students, most who come from the northeast states from families in the upper economic class. It's not cheap if you don't get a scholarship. If the team depended solely on students and alumni (most who move away after graduating), they would be hard-pressed to sell out the stadium on big games.


Most locals who attend college do it the working class way, like I did. Most attend Miami-Dade Community College for a couple of years (now called Miami Dade College) and then move on to Florida International University, which has a very good academic reputation for a fraction of the tuition.

But until a couple of years ago, FIU did not have a football team. And now that they have one, it's going to be years before they even come close to matching the hurricanes.

Carolina alum, no axe to grind against WVU--but that's a tough place to play because of the fans.

I've been to VaTech home games, and found their fans to be very gracious, even after losing tight games.

Wanna have some fun? Try a Clemson-South Carolina game. Now THAT's some animosity.

NC State and East Carolina had to suspend their series for years because of riots and damage to the field.

As someone who has 3 older brothers who all attended Alabama back in the 70s, I would LOVE to go to an Alabama-Auburn game someday. WHAT a rivalry. Only Carolina-Duke in basketball compares--well, maybe Michigan-Ohio State or Texas-Oklahoma or Florida State-Florida-Miami in football. But that's it!

I'm a diehard Jawga Bulldawg. I live in FL now and was traveling up 75 to visit home in '97. I went back to school to get my PhD and we were pretty broke so all I could afford to drive was an old beater Buick. It had a GA sticker on the back and we made the mistake of stopping for lunch in Gainesville. We came out to find two tires slashed (GA upset FL that year). A friend of mine had his window smashed in at a GA/FL game back in the mid 80s when I was at UGA.

I have a number of friends that are FL fans and we do not associate on the day of the GA/FL game. Not my choice but theirs. It protects our friendship since they can't help themselves.

I will also nominate Tennessee for having the most annoying fight song...Rocky Top.

The students demonstrate their lack of class, weekly with their "who cares" chant when the opponents are introduced. (whatever happened to respecting your amateur athletic opponents? - Can't somebody at that University teach RESPECT?). Then the students start that tomahawk chop motion, completely forgetting that it was the Seminoles who used hatchets, not Wolverines. And everytime the refs call any play against the Wolverines, the whole stadium erupts with their ubiquitous "the refs are out to get us" cat-calls. Oh yes, and the U of M has never lost a legitimate football game in team history. Every time they "lose", it's because the refs have cheated against them.

There is nothing like it. LOVE it. I have been to four other college stadiums (Rose Bowl, Autzen Stadium in Oregon, Husky Stadium in Seattle, and Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.)

Of those, anyway, the Big House is the BEST.
