That's basically an ignorant invention of the eastern and midwestern press. I went to USC in the '80s and no one called it Southern Cal. The correct terminology is 'SC, and always has been. Only in the last decade or so the USC sports information department has asked the media covering the games NOT to say Southern Cal. It's finally having some impact. That's why you're hearing the correct 'SC references by the announcers, not Southern Cal.
