Should the 'Horns be #1?
Not to say that USC hasn't had tougher match-ups. The Longhorns, on the other hand, have been playing consistently and with finesse regardless of who they're playing.

USC has had near losses in their last three match-ups. Really, now, are they the #1 team in the nation?

I think they ought to step aside and let Texas take the #1 berth. What do you say?

5. How do you spell NO?
Horns would have lost at South Bend today. One could say the Trojans have had 27 near losses in a row. I'm not a USC fan but its gonna take something more than today's game on the homefield of the luckiest team in football to bump them out of my poll as number one.

N.O.

Anyone who's opening against Louisiana-Lafayette needs to drop 5 points in principle.

Let Texas play Notre Dame at home and we'll see. Till then, I'll take the Cardiac Kids at USC or VT or Georgia or Alabama...and I think Texas Tech may end the discussion anyway.

27. Don't confuse criticism of Texas with
defense of USC...however this year I'll take the Pac 10 over the Big 12 hands down for competitiveness. Regardless, I think it's a good policy to root against teams from Florida and Texas and I have believed this since before I ever heard the words Governer Bush. But now I feel vindicated. :P

37. Hawaii is Div I, at least
and last year had a heisman finalist. La-Lafayette is I-AA, the game doesn't even count towards the BCS standings. And USC did have to fly 7 hours to play that game, in someone else's stadium.

Everyone schedules patsies, it's stupid to reward them in any way.

Notre Dame, by the way, was ranked 9th, having beaten teams in the top 5 (Michigan), USC is the top team until someone beats them, or Texas goes on a run of beating top ten teams, on the road.

With what defense? Texas' is ranked #5 in the nation. Sure they have a passing game... but... that don't win against a top-ranked blitz.

Texas will beat Tech.

11. Typical UT line!
"Damn it, we're entitled to this!"

USC had three near losses? Try three hard-fought victories. Sorry, but until they lose, they keep the top slot in my book.

Don't worry, Texas is going to cough up a goofy loss at some point this season, you can count on it. I like Texas Tech in a few weeks, but I will laugh my happy hindquarters off if it's Baylor!

Yeah, it was supposed to be Colorado this week.

Remember when Texas won the Rose Bowl last year?

And I hated to see how Alabama nearly beat up on USC last week. That was a poor show from a supposedly #1 team.

Last week we beat Arizona 42-21. Prior to that we came from behind to defeat Arizona St. 38-28 on the road, and Oregon 45-13 on the road. The other games were home to Arkansas, where we scored 70+, and at Hawaii in the opener.

13. This must be a joke
The only game similar to this on Texas' schedule so far was at Ohio State and the Horns were hardly dominant. In fact, similarly fortunate. They were down in the middle of the 4th quarter and Ohio St missed a very manageable FG that would have put the Buckeyes up by 9. Texas' winning TD was a great catch into double coverage in the final minute or so. Then the Ohio St. QB fumbled and I think Texas padded the final margin with another FG or TD. But it was life or death all the way. Ohio St had tons of possessions in Texas territory with the lead and chances to put the game away, but kept settling for FG attempts.

32. Not yet. I think they CAN pass USC without USC losing, but
Not based on this week. USC beat a tough team in a very tough fight. UT beat a team they weren't supposed to have any trouble with.

If UT beats Texas Tech next week, then the conversation starts to have meaning. Until they are challenged, though, all they've proven is they are a very talented team that can beat teams they are supposed to easily beat. They always do that.

It's beating tough teams they've never been good at. They have tremendous talent, but weak coaching. Let's wait and see.

And for the record, I'm a UT alum and live in Austin, so this isn't homerism for USC.

38. If that's the case, then, the fault lays squarely with a weak Big 12
C'mon - Baylor? Texas A&M? UT needs to play more Big Dawgs. It used to be Nebraska, but Texas settled that dispute in 1996 during the Big 12's first season. They won a tough battle against #4 Ohio State and ... remember that Rose Bowl versus Michigan?

Texas has what it needs. Now it needs a challenge. Tech is going to try, but Tech doesn't have a running game nor a defense. I disagree with you on the coaching. Texas' defense and overall play execution is due squarely to excellent coaching.

Hook 'em, btw. '97 :)

41. If they played a tougher schedule
they'd lose a couple games. They have the talent, but they are still sloppy. Brown is a weak coach, but a great recruiter. This year his staff seems to be getting better, though. If they beat Tech, they should go undefeated, at least until the bowl game.

That 97 Big 12 Title Game was beautiful. That was coaching and a good team, not just a bunch of talented players outrunning their opponents. If Brown could coach like Makovich coached that day, and if he'd have started Applewhite instead of pretending Simms could play, we'd have won a championship already.
