So who are the NICEST college football fans out there?
Edited on Sun Oct-16-05 02:52 PM by RagingInMiami
For me, it was Nebraska fans. Even though I always root against Nebraska and Oklahoma because it seems the pollsters are always biased towards them, their fans are top-notched.

Back in 2001, when I went to the Rose Bowl game when it was the Hurricanes against the Cornhuskers, the stadium was about 70 percent Nebraska fans. And I was sitting in an all-Nebraska section.

At first, I was like "oh shit", having sat in the FSU section in a Canes/Seminoles game once, where they threw things at me.

But Nebraska fans turned out to be very cool. We had friendly banter before the game, even posing for photos together, then after the Canes blew them out, they were very courteous and came down and congratulated me.

Nebraska fans are a class act.

1. definitely not FSU fans. (in my experience anyway!)
I'll agree with you on that one. Perhaps Duke fans? I mean, they rarely win... so the game of lowered expectations keeps the really competitive types away from the football stadium.

:D

15. Lately, Seminole fans have been pacified
By Miami beating them like six times in a row before this year's game. Back then, it was much more intense and it was rare for either team to win two years in a row.

19. Absolutely Agree With You....
the Seminole fans in JAX at the Gator Bowl last year were the absolute best fans I have been around in a very long time. Friendly, friendly, friendly almost to the man (or woman). I sat in a section that was mixed about 50/50 at Alltel and everyone got along very well. Didn't have to endure the "redneck," "hillbilly," "inbred" taunts that opposing fans always direct at West Virginian's. The experience was so positive that it really changed the way I viewed FSU. I went from despising the 'Noles to actually finding myself pulling for them some this year.

25. Yeah, the FSU fans were VERY tame at the Gator Bowl last year.
Until the 4th quarter, when the FIRE JEFF BOWDEN starts in my heavy Nole section.

2. Not us.
Sure, at LSU we will invite you to chow down on some gumbo or boudin at our tailgating party before the game, but put enough bourbon in us and get on our bad side...Tennessee's bus had broken windows as it left Tiger Stadium, OU fans complained that that had beer bottles thrown at them at the 04 Sugar Bowl, and a nasty rumour went around Auburn's campus that we threw urine filled water bottles at their fans (a lie).

I don't know whether to be proud or ashamed of our passion and voracity. I mean, don't break stuff, but get into it.

I was watching the UVA game last night, and they seemed to have nice fans. Boring looking old people in flanel and sweaters and the like.

3. Nebraska? You are kidding right? Those are not the Nebraska fans I know
I grew up in Iowa and moved to Missouri.
The few times that either Iowa State or Missouri beat Nebraska in Lincoln, it was very ugly for the fans to get out to the state.
The Nebraska highway patrol has been noted for tagging cars from the states hosting colleges that beat Nebraska in Football.

When I was in College, my roommate was from Nebraska, I remember many a football game, he was yelling and screaming and throwing things at the TV.

OH and never go shopping in Lincoln or Omaha on game day, If you do, stay from between the fans and the TV at Best Buy.

I live in Ohio now and I wouldn't rate Ohio State fans any higher.

5. These were fans who had traveled all the way to Southern California
for the game. To them, it was a vacation regardless of the outcome considering how cold it gets in Nebraska during the winter. I guess it's different in Nebraska.

I'm not too fond of Ohio State fans having experienced them at the Fiesta Bowl in 2002.

8. Nebraska Fans But I Am Biased
Edited on Sun Oct-16-05 03:16 PM by Stephist
My fellow Nebraskans are usually to busy ripping their own team to insult the other team. as for the post above me Missouri hasn't won in lincoln since 1973 and Iowa State since 1977 so it's nice to see your basing your opinion of us on 30 year old events. I can tell you from experience Missouri fans are far more rude to us then we are to them.

As for other BIG XII teams the one time I went to Stillwater to see a game I thought Oklahoma State fans were a class act.

12. When they win, they are great.
When they lose, not so great. They beat the Raiders by seventy a few years back and it was rub of the green, but when Tech rang up seventy on them last year it was "bad sportsmanship".

4. I also vote for Nebraska fans
I'm a University of Texas alum, and the Cornhusker fans are hands-down the best sports I've seen. I'm not dogging my own team's fans...but we can be cantankerous and fair-weathered. Nebraska fans are always polite and generous with their praise--I remember them coming to Austin, and clapping just as hard for the good plays UT players made as they did for their own team. They are classy.

Some of the worst? Texas Tech. At Jones Stadium, you're likely to get a spit cup upside the head. And the University at Colorado at Boulder is a close second. Their fans are all stoned (OK, so are most of UT's!) and they throw cups and ice at the opposing team from the stands.

Then there's A&M...but I'll stop now! :P

Peace,

RV

Nebraska and read your post.

I'm really surprised FSU has such a bad rep. We think the Gators are awful.

7. Back in the late 80s and early 90s
FSU/Miami games would bring out the worst in fans from both sides. Lately, it seems to have mellowed a bit although there are still fights in the stands.

9. I agree.
When they were in Pittsburgh last year, they were awesome. There was a sea of red in Heinz Field, and every person I met was cool.
I went to the game with a bunch of Husker fans, but I wore my Pitt gear.
Also, I was at the College World Series this year, and the fans there were great as well.
Nebraska. Definitely.

16. I've found Nebraska fans to be a mixed bag
I know they've always got a great reputation, and that's fine, but what I've seen personally hasn't quite lived up to it. I've had good conversations with some, but observed plenty of obnoxious behavior in others (planning to piss on our athletic center, cussing out minimum wage workers at a fast food joint b/c they weren't allowed to bring their open containers in to use the bathroom, general name calling, etc.).

Alabama fans were among the nicest I've met, but that might be because we weren't conference rivals and so had less at stake ...

17. I've always had positive experiences with Nebraska fans
Edited on Sun Oct-16-05 09:57 PM by Awsi Dooger
In the '80s and early '90s Miami hosted Nebraska and beat them in many bowl games in the Orange Bowl, games I attended. It was kind of pathetic when Canes fans would insult the Nebraska fans and the team itself, especially in '88 and '91 when we were way ahead and the Cornhuskers had no passing game while trying to catch up. My fellow Canes fans were really overdoing it while taunting the Nebraska section.

Then I'd fly back to Las Vegas on the same flights with Nebraska fans leaving Miami. They were suprisingly approachable and friendly, even after losing. I remember telling many of them after the '91 game that Tom Osborne had the right idea, to stick to the power running game, but just get comparable athletes to the Miamis and FSUs. When he managed that a few years later, Nebraska came within 1 point of FSU in an Orange Bowl in which the refs basicaslly robbed the Cornhuskers, then beat Miami in the Orange Bowl a year later for one national title, before shattering Florida the following year for another championship and one of the greatest college teams ever.

Unfortunately, Bill Callahan doesn't understand basic football and has turned Nebraska into just another spread offense pantyhose team. I think it's disgusting.

23. Being a CU fan...
I dispute your thesis. I still remember the "Sal's Dead, Go Big Red" days.

It's like Canada, bragging how polite you are, isn't polite. Yeah you're dedicated fans... because there's nothing else to do. And quit pretending your nonconference schedule is anything other than bounty hunting patsies.

And like every other Thanksgiving Boulder will turn into a shanty town of RVs. Every tow-truck will be reving their engine in anticipation.

the people I've encountered who have been the most personally nice to me are fans from:

Oregon
Washington State
Iowa
Washington (in Ann Arbor; can't extend it to Washington fans in Seattle)
