1. Yes, he is
Got off the plane decked head to foot in Detroit Tigers' garb.

But he went to Notre Dame instead of Michigan. Probably because he's a Republican...:-(

2. Is he really a Repuke?
And I bet he went to ND because he's a Catholic.

4. Well all of his campaign contributions went to the GOP
That makes him Republican in my book.

5. What I'm saying is that the decision to go to a Catholic school
was likely based on his being a Catholic. He could be a Repuke, although you gotta admit that very few 17 and 18-year-olds make their school choice on poltiical party affiliation--most kids that age couldn't care one way or the other.

6. I think it was based on the scholarship he was offered
Edited on Wed Feb-01-06 10:49 AM by 1gobluedem
I don't think he's Catholic. But there are Catholic liberals -- like me.

7. Michigan offered a full ride as well
a recruit at that level doesn't make his decision based on his scholarship, they are all the same. They make decisions based on the coach, the team, the style of play and which team has boosters willing to buy his great aunt a Sububan he can drive. (right, Robert Traylor?)

8. That wasn't the school
That was a so-called booster(who wasn't a member of any official University booster clubs) that two idiot coaches let get too close to the program. They are gone, Michigan voluntarily forfeited the wins of all players associated with the guy. It's over.

Was Lou Holtz still at ND when Bettis went there? I have always liked ND, they are my second-favorite team after Michigan.

9. sure it wasn't :)
Michigan simply got caught. Everyone does it. Check out the parking lot at USC, (how did Matt Leinart go clubbing and live in a fancy neighborhood, anyway and drive a BMW? he is banned from working, maybe his family is rich? ) or how Vince Young, who's father is in jail and mother lives in public housing, somehow managed to live off campus and drive a new car. must have won the lottery, both of them. You see those suits that Reggie Bush wore to games and interviews? and all the bling that college players wear? where does that come from?

this isn't an indictment of either one of them, but really, in a world in which college athletes can't work, and can't get paid, someone is paying the bills.

11. Why single out Michigan, then?
Which has, frankly, not only had fewer problems than many big time programs (ever read "Under the Tarnished Dome?"), but also voluntarily forfeited basketball wins for years, gave up scholarships, and gave up tournament eligibility. Ed Martin had connections to Michigan State, too, but somehow that story vanished forever several days after I saw it on the Lansing news.

I think it's a travesty that scholarship athletes can't work. Kids with academic scholarships can. Since they are all presumably training for future careers, it seems unfair. Of course, I do agree that you need to make sure the athletes are actually working at the jobs, but in general, I don't think it's a fair system.

14. because we were talking about Michigan
If Jerome Bettis was from Alabama, I'd be talking about their problems. Context, my friend, context.

plus, I'm still pissed off that they blew The Game, that shit cost me 50 bucks.

16. Well, you just mentioned that Michigan offered him a scholarship too
but I'm sure that Michigan and ND weren't the only ones. It just seemed as if you took a gratuitous shot at Michigan, but then, who the heck doesn't? I should be used to it by now.

17. he should have gone to Michigan
he is from Michigan, hence the Irish stole him from Ann Arbor's backyard. If he was from Cleveland, I'd be taking gratuitous shots at OSU, from Houston at Texas, see?

20. Here's why Bettis went to Notre Dame:
http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060127/SPORTS0106/601270322

"It came down that Michigan wanted me to play linebacker," Bettis explained...

"Bettis... ...was afraid he lacked the height to be an optimum NFL linebacker. He was all but prepared to sign with U-M during his official visit until Bettis got wind Moeller was hedging his bets.

Michigan's head coach was chasing Ohio's top high school running back, Ricky Powers, who ultimately signed with Michigan after he had originally settled on Michigan State."

"It was the fact he went to visit Ricky Powers on Christmas Eve that rubbed me pretty ugly," Bettis said. "I was in Michigan's back yard. It rubbed me a little wrong."

"He only soured on Michigan State after being told he would play linebacker or fullback for the Spartans. Their offense wasn't my kind of offense," Bettis said. "The fullback position wasn't utilized that much (running the ball) at Michigan State. They wanted me at linebacker. But I knew my height would prohibit me from going to the next level as a linebacker."

Detroit
Mayor's PAC got late jolt of cash
Kilpatrick fund's filing was tardy

A few weeks before Nov. 8 when Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's re-election was in serious doubt, Peter Karmanos, the chief executive of Compuware and big Detroit booster, donated $100,000 to a political action committee controlled by the mayor.

He wasn't the only one: Plumbing contractor Jerome Morgan of Bloomfield Township gave $50,000 and Republican operative and businessman James Nicholson of Grosse Pointe Farms threw in $25,000, as did a mystery woman. Jerome Bettis, a Detroit native and Pittsburgh Steelers star running back, gave $6,600.

<snip>

In its entirety here:http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060202/NEWS01/602020548

I wouldn't call Kwame a Republican. Hell, I'm not proud to have him, but the Mayor is one of us.

Not mentioned in this article is that Bettis owns a construction company in Metro Detroit. Maybe he contributed so some $$ would come back to him, Not saying it's illegal....

I'll look for more on the latter topic.

Saw it in the paper today.

OTOH, Bettis has founded and funds a program for underpriviledged and at-risk youth.

The only thing Hussain funded was death and destruction

Especially the part about Al Michaels...

Which youthful Polynesian defender will Super Bowl commentator Al Michaels eye-fuck the hardest: Troy Polamalu or Lofa Tatupu?
