1. Is it me or is something up with that link?
Firefox opens a download box when I click on it.

Anyway,

I would love to be a fly on the wall in Steinbrenner's office when he hears the news.

I'm not as sure about Beltran as a lot of people. We'll see how he handles the bright lights of New York. Of course he didn't have much problem with the big stage of the playoffs...

What are the Mets going to do with Mike Cameron??

4. Uh, Cameron's hurt past opening day.
Keep him on the DL is the answer so far.

GOOD JOB, METS!

7. Might as well trade Cameron.
He said he'll move to RF, but he's a gold glove CF. Hit 30 HR's last year, but poor OBP and low average.
Saw a report that said George isn't interested in Beltran.

11. It would make more sense to move Beltran to right.
Or to trade Cameron for some relief pitching.

8. Wilpon said "I'm tired of losing!"
Guess he means it, but give Minaya credit for salesmanship. $200 Millions worth counting Benson, Martinez, and Beltran.

9. He's staying in the NL...
and that's good. That he's not going to the Yanks is even better.

12. Mets have a GM.
This guy Minaya is the best GM we've had around here since Frank Cashen. He seems to know what he's doing, and know what he wants.
Now can they get Delgado? He doesn't stand for "God Bless America", and some folks don't like that, but imagine...
Reyes SS
Matsui 2B
Beltran CF
Delgado 1B
Cameron RF
Wright 3B
Piazza C
Floyd LF
Pitcher

I not sure what to make of this though

But you should separate politics from sports.

13. You have to separate politics and sports.
Or else you have to give up on sports altogether.

15. yarite. Tell that to the "Office of the commissioner of Baseball"

who/what contributed 100 grand to Chimpy s coronation.

They're not separating politics and sports, why should our newest CFer?

Anyway, this Metsie is happy about this marvelous addition. I know it seems like a grotesquely humungous sum, but then so did the 85 mil they spent for Mike Piazza.

16. Huh?
We were talking about us, the fans. If we don't ignore the politics of the players, teams and leagues, we aren't going to be able to watch. Your post doesn't address the issue under discussion.

14. ESPN says . . .
it could be a real mixed bag for the stem this year:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1944838

Big Picture: Omar Minaya has taken over the Mets and committed $172 million to Beltran and Pedro Martinez. There has been much talk about how Minaya won the hearts and minds of Beltran and Martinez, but in both cases, the players took offers that were more than $10 million greater than those of competing teams, so the successful negotiations probably had more to do with money than moxie. There is much work to be done on middle relief, a question mark in Mike Piazza at catcher, a big hole at first base, a second baseman (Kaz Matsui) who will be learning a new position, and a lot of injury risk in the starting rotation. But the Mets' activity has ramped up the hopes of the team's fans, and if New York struggles in 2005, Minaya will be out on a limb; if the team contends, he will be a hometown hero. He is destined to get either too much credit or too much blame.
