Anyone else watching the Olympic Curling?
I don't know what it is, but I LOVE curling, and I've never played it.

Is that weird?

1. I'm watching. Curling rules!
It is fascinating to watch. I've never played it either, but I kind of wish I lived somewhere where I might take it up :)

I got hooked on curling at the Salt Lake Olympics. My wife and I went to the Super G event, and while everyone was waiting for the runs to start (we had to get there VERY early) they showed the curling live on the huge replay screen. The whole crowd was thoroughly into the match, and we would all oooh and ahhh in unison. It was great fun, kind of like watching curling in a (very very cold) sports bar :)

3. Me either, and I haven't a CLUE why the U.S.A. just lost to Finland
Maybe I should read up on the scoring system, because the U.S. had several rocks in the White ring, and they knocked the Finish rocks into the Blue ring, but still lost???

I don't get it.

4. You only get points if you have the closest stone
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 09:05 PM by fishwax
Only the team with the closest stone scores, and the more stones they have close the more they score. So if one team has the three closest stones when the end is over, they get three points. The US team lost to Finland because the Fins had the close shot in the last end when the score was tied, even though it was very close.

5. Oh, O.K., I get it now
So the different color rings don't really mean that much, they just designate a target area, sort of like the target ball in Bocce Ball or Petanque - The French Game of Boules.

8. That's right.
You get one point for each of your rocks that's closer to the bullseye ("button") than any of your opponent's.

7. I actually enjoyed curling more when I didn't know that.
It was more like some sort of surrealist performance art then.

It's still fun though.

6. Saw some of it
Mr. Retrograde taped the curling and the biathalon. The curling was strangely compelling - I like the overhead shots. And best of all, no smarmy commentary!

9. Me Neither And Me Too
I've never done it. It looks cool. I love watching it. In fact, that and hockey are about the only things i care about in the winter olympics. (OK, so i watch the ski jumping too.)
