Detroit Tigers' first baseman Chris Shelton is on fire.
http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/team/player_career.jsp?player_id=430828&y=2004.

Eight home runs. Sixteen RBI's. 1.20 slugging percentage. .479 batting average in 48 at bats.

"His 57 putouts not only heads the Tigers' stingy defensive effort this season, but had him tied for the lead through Sunday among AL first basemen."

The kid's on fire!

He's already earned one AL player of the week award, and may be in line for another one after hitting three more home runs and getting 7 more RBI's this week.

http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060410&content_id=1393785&vkey=news_det&fext=.jsp&c_id=det

"Shelton, 25, batted .583 in the first six games of the 2006 season while leading the league with 14 hits, nine RBIs, a 1.458 slugging percentage and 35 total bases. He also posted a .615 on-base percentage with seven runs scored, two triples and two doubles."

This is the kind of early publicity that can send a guy to the All Star game. Shelton had 46 at bats last year, so I'm not sure if he's eligible for Rookie of the Year honors, or not. He's a real quiet humble kid too. Nice to see in the era of inflated egos. Go get em Tigers!

2. when does the Steroid testing start?
Quite a few homers to start the season off... Tigers are in possession of a large amount of ungood!

I don't like Detroit. Down with the Pistons! Down with the Red Wings!

I think you need close to 150 plate apperances to disqualify yourself for RoY.

3. Why don't you like Detroit?
What did it ever do to you?

Go Pistons!
Go Wings!
Go Tigers!

and, yes, even

Go Lions!

4. Ha ha ha ha The Bears beat Detroit Twice last year!
And they will beat them twice this year! I hope the Lions keep Millen! ha ha ha ha

and I can't wait for Steve Y to retire, and the Red wings stole Chelios!

And the Pistons aren't going to win the title this year! They are a bore-a-thon! And even thought the Bad Boys were a bunch of thuggish, cheaters with no soul for the art of the game, they were far better than the current despicable incarnation!

The Tigers will never win again, so just keep celebrating those '68 ad '84 titles. Never again!

5. I know the Lions are bad
I support my home teams no matter what.

And I am so sick of people calling the Pistons boring! What's happened to this country anyway? Are we only supposed to like ball hogging jerks like Kobe Bryant instead of a beautiful exercise in teamwork like the Pistons? I don't get it. So the team with the NBA's best record is boring. Good. We'll bore everyone as we head toward the NBA finals and then we'll win the most boring championship ever.

The Wings stole Chelios? How? And if you're so worried about a 40 year old player like Stevie Y, that doesn't say a whole lot about the Blackhawks, does it.

6. The Pistons have never been interested in the grace of the game
ala the Bulls! You'd better just pray the Bulls win tonight, because Nocioni is going to give back to Detroit as good as cheap shot artist Lame-beer ever did. And Gordon will light up Chauncey (what a dandyified name!)

And the Pistons won't get past the Heat. Shaq has been saving his energy for the playoffs.

And I don't root just for UNIFORMS like you! :hide: I support players who I grew up with and thought were good! Chelios, come back to Chicago, even though you're 46!

BTW, this is in a jovial tone. I'm really not being callously caustic, more sarcasticly acerbic.

7. I don't root just for uniforms
The Bill Laimbeer days are long gone. The current Pistons are as gracious and classy a group of players as I've seen in years. Joe Dumars is the personfication of grace and charm and has built a successful franchise using solid citizens who are more interested in winning games than individual stats. Almost all are family men through and through and their families travel with them on the road.

Scott Skiles, the Bulls coach, ah yes. I remember well how Michigan State got his DUI jail sentence postponed so he could play in the NCAA tournament. Have fun with that guy.

And Cheli likes playing for the Wings. It's fun to play for a winner.

Pistons will get past the Heat with no problem. Shaq or no Shaq. The guy's past his prime. Go Big Ben!

Yes, all in good fun....:)

9. Michael Jordan POISONED the NBA and it still hasn't recovered
Edited on Wed Apr-19-06 12:48 PM by LisaM
The poor networks are still trying to find the "next Jordan", ignoring some great team basketball going on right under their noses.

If Detroit had had a player consorting with known drug dealers and out gambling in Atlantic City the night before a game, the media would have been merciless. With Jordan, it just all died away.

The Lions may be bad, but if I were from Chicago (thank GOD I'm not), I think I'd steer clear of the subject of the Blackhawks. Besides, don't forget Cheli played 8 years with the Habs before going to Chicago. Did Chicago steal him from Montreal?

Now be quiet and go eat some kielbasa.

10. Well, are you going to blame Dr. J?
Dr. J had that style before Jordan. And bigtime scorers were around long before Jordan. Jordan was just the first to say I can score a billion points and get my team to win a title and without a center!

But, Jordan's no hero. Sports "heros" are for another topic.

This topic is about how cruddy Detroit is! But, Montreal is sucktown as well! Just jetison Andre Dawson why dontcha! Thankfully he came to a real baseball market and cemented his hall of fame career here, despite ruining his knees in Montreal suck city! Screw the Habs!

However, The Lions are very bad with players who are also morally bad as well. Further proof of the divine disfavor on Detroit and Michigan! These Detroit Tigers will behave just like Sigfried and Roy's Tigers, sure they may get a big bite this year but they will resort to their tame manners soon enough!

And now that it's lunchtime I think I'll get a polish on maxwell!

There is no way anyone could accuse him of using steroids.

You're just bitter because we got cutie Maggie Ordonez.

14. While I do not share your attraction to Mags
He was an excellent player for the White Sox for many a season. From 1999-2003 he was a "Stud", of a different kind. And the steroid acqusation is not really serious.

But, the homer numbers are very high. Unfortunately, I think many players are going to pay with skepticism from fans when they put together a good power season because of Sos, McGwire, Bonds, Canceso, Giambi, Caminitti (RIP), brady Anderson, Palmerio, Albert 'Joey' Belle and others.

But, in reality it's the young ball players and high schoolers with dreams of the bigs who will suffer adverse health effects for years by thinking they need to 'roid it up in order to make it...

Here's a syllogism:
All Detroit Sports Teams are Teams that Suck.
The Lions, Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings are Detroit Sports Teams.
Therefore, the Lions, Tigers, Pistons and Red wings Suck!

I didn't realize it extended to Detroit, also.

22. I remember when Hondo played for the Tigers.
I think it was about 1975. He only played here about one season. He was at the end of his career, and his game had diminished considerably, but nonetheless, the great Frank Howard was a onetime Detroit Tiger. I still vividly remember one big comeback victory by the Tigers where one of Frank's bounding balls actually made it through the infield for a game-winning RBI!
I've rooted for a lot of Tigers over my lifetime. I remember Al Kaline, Willie Horton, Norm Cash, Mickey Lolich, Aurelio Rodriguez and all the rest of those greats. Still, some of my all-time favorite Tigers were traded to us: Darrell Evans, Mickey Tettleton, and of course, the great Rusty Staub.

23. I remember that he had to wear someone else's shirt...
Gates Brown's or Lolich's, I can't remember.

I DO remember him winning a Monday Night game with a home run for the Tigers.
LOTS of former Senators on that team: 3rd baseman Rodriqieuz, Brinkman, Joe Coleman...

If you've seen Shelton, you'll instantly see he is built more like Babe Ruth than the bodybuilder type that steroids produces.
