Dumb Question! Why was Steinbrenner banned from baseball?
My memory is faulty, and I recall him being banned in the 70's, mainly, I think, just for being such an asshole, although the given reason was that he was a disruptive influence. Am I recalling this correctly? If so, how did he get back in?

1. If memory serves, he was banned for illegal campaign contributions
to none other than "Tricky Dick" Nixon. The suspension was for a set period of time (I think it was one year), and when that time had elapsed, he was allowed back into MLB.

4. Banned TWICE
Once for the Nixon contributions, for which he was indicted on several counts and pled guilty to one count , and once for paying a small time gambler a large sum of money to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield. Initially, he was banned for life for this episode, obviously it has been reduced.

Incidentally, Reagan pardonded Steinbrenner on his last in office. Remember that next time a Repuke complains about Clinton's pardons

5. Thanks for the info.
There was something about all this in Ken Burns' Baseball--I have it, so I'll have to watch it for more details!

7. I think the gambler's name was Harold Spyra or something like that.
I don't want to look it up. Anyway Steinbrenner paid him off to dig up dirt on Winfield - who was Steinbrenner's number one star at the time. He's just insane.

8. Thanks--I'll have to watch Baseball (Ken Burns) now to fill in the
rest....you know, as individuals, I don't hate the Yankees, but as an organization, I do, largely because of Steinbrenner.
