QB Chris Simms has spleen removed after Bucs loss to Panthers FRED GOODALL TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Tampa Bay quarterback Chris Simms had his spleen removed after taking several hard hits in Sunday's 26-24 loss to the Carolina Panthers and was resting comfortably in a hospital.

"Chris is doing well and we anticipate a full recovery," team physician Dr. Joe Diaco said in a brief statement, adding the 26-year- old son of former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms was in stable condition.

Simms had a blood transfusion as part of his treatment and was expected to be hospitalized for several days, Peter King said during a break on NBC's Sunday Night Football, citing a conversation the Sports Illustrated reporter had with Simms' mother, Diana Simms.

Simms, who left the game briefly but returned, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, a few blocks from Raymond James Stadium. Coach Jon Gruden said during his post-game press conference that Simms hurt his ribs early in the game and was also battling dehydration.

1. Simms immediately called the DLC, master of spleenectomies.
"We've done so many we could do the operation blindfolded," said Al From. Doctor Tom Carper will be performing the surgery.

2. Love the headline
They lost to the Panthers, so he had spleen removed.

If they lose to the 49ers do they remove a finger? What's the penalty for losing to the Texans?

Seriously though, those hits he took yesterday were brutal.

3. Jon Gruden is an idiot.
Chris Simms problems are three fold.
1. He plays in one of football's most complicated offenses.
2. He plays behind one of the worst O-lines if not the worst O-line in football.
3. He plays for a coach that seems determined to try and kill him.

4. Surprised
I am somewhat surprised that noone is making jokes about how this happened after Bush visited Simms and gave him a pep talk. I contend this makes Bush look at least a little bad, in that it seems that everything always goes bad or worse once he steps in. Simms was not having a great year before the Bush pep talk, but at least he was not having body parts removed. Hey, maybe that is why Nick Saban did not want to meet with Bush when he visited Miami. Saban may have figured out something that a large number of people have not figured out. Bush might be bad for your health.

6. See? All the smarty pantses out there say that,:
'by definition, you can't give 110 Percent' out there.

But if you can give up your spleen during a game you are, obviously, carrying around a percentage of What You Don't Need.

See?

Football wisdom is never wrong.
