Football fans were sadden this weekend to learn... |
|
that Paul Maguire was still employed and running his mouth about football on national TV. The question is WHYYYYYYY!?!??!
He is now part of the crew (for the time being anyway) of Brad Nessler and Brian Griese. They called the Ohio State Penn State game on Saturday.
I sat down to watch the game and heard something...no it couldn't be...what is he doing back on TV let alone doing a college game??? Yep it was Maguire.
He must either have a good agent of Disney is running out the string on his contract. Not only does he come off as an ass his not so slightly veiled racist comments have no place on TV in my humble opinion.

1. You know, I actually kind of liked him on Sunday Night NFL games. |
|
If for no other reason than he called Theismann on his bullshit. But yeah, that OS/PS game was just painful because he kept chiming in.
I don't know that any of his comments have struck me as racist, though. Just annoying as hell. Rubbing it in because he guessed a ball spot correctly? Ugh.

Maybe because I automatically tuned him out and never actually listened to what he said.

I like him, and I like Theisman, too. The one I can't bear is Al Michaels, total BushBot.

4. Well having grown up around this I can recognize it |
|
Complaining about "prima donna" wide receivers and excessive dancing/celebration are code for "uppity blacks". I have heard it all my life and I know what it means and Maguire perpetuates it repeatedly.

I have been around football my ENTIRE life and I can tell you that the celebratory dances 1) are not limited to black people; and 2) are completely obnoxious. No true fan can stand all those endzone shenanigans.

That is an awful stretch to say that he is a racist because he doesn't like end zone dances and the players acting like an ass when they are down 28 points in the 4th quarter, make a pointless tackle and act like they are conquering gladiators. He is old school just like Madden, Howie Long has also talked about that players have to knock that shit off, just looking for racism where is doesn't exist. If you don't like PM that is fine, but don't call him a racist because of it and your dislike is making you hear things that are not there.

7. I was stunned a few weeks ago on the first ABC telecast |
|
when I heard Maguire paired with Nessler and Griese. If any duo needed to be left alone, that was it. Nessler has always been among the best play by play guys and has a good repoire with Griese.
To tell you the truth, it's been improving and less gruesome than I expected. During the Oklahoma/Washington game a few weeks ago Maguire was talking over Griese and there were many instances with awkwards pauses while Griese and Nessler weren't sure when Maguire was going to butt in. At least they are joking around a little bit now.
My grief with Maguire is he's the master of the obvious. There will be a basic play and Maguire jumps in on the replay analysis screaming, "I tell you what...," then he says something no one could possibly disagree with and most likely already noticed during the play itself.
