Sportscasters You really enjoy listening to.
Way up top on my short list is Phillies broadcaster HARRY KALAS. The absolute best professional in his field. Knowledgeable, low key but easily exciteable - "That balls outta here!" Prior to Richie Asburn's death in 97, they were the best sports duo on the air.

1. Bob Uecker
Milwaukee has been blessed to have an announcer as good and as funny as Bob considering how awful their teams have been the past decade and a half.

9. Uecker, Costas and Morgan
used to do ballgames togethr back in the nineties when nbc did baseball. It was one of the best booths in my opinion, all the bases covered, knowledge from all three, Bob and Joe providing the players' experience and Uecker with the comedy.

35. I've always liked Costas.
I know I'm in the minority in that aspect.

I DON'T like Morgan, though. I can't stand Morgan OR Jon Miller.

2. As a lifelong Mets fan...
It was Bob Murphy before he died but I guess now it is Gary Cohen, although I think his talents are wasted on TV...he painted a wonderful picture when he was on the radio.

3. I loved Bill King
He could do football, baseball, basketball. I really missed him this year on the A's radio broadcasts.

The guy was a walking baseball encyclopedia. He could remember stats and games from years ago. I have problems remembering a game from the day before.

And Bill had a vast knowledge of such a wide variety of topics. He wasn't just a sports guy. He'd go off on tangents during games. Not because he was trying to be a smart ass, but because he really had an interest in all sorts of things and could wrap those conversations into lulls or appropriate points in a game.

I think it would have been fascinating to sit down and have a one on one with him.

I liked Lon too. He used to do A's games. I'm not a Giants fan, but I can tolerate them if Lon is doing the game. Can't stand Krukow, Miller or Kuiper.

4. Announcers i Love
One of the top guys for me is Mike Emerich, i believe that his name. He does the New Jersey Devils hockey broadcast. The guy is great at what he does. I also love Mike Patrick, providing the sanity to Dickie V's lack there of.

5. I lived a long time in LA
area. Can't say as I hear many that compare to Vin Scully. For an example of his mastery, a transcript of his announcing was made the night Koufax threw a perfecto against the Cubs and turned intoa shoart story in a sports story book. After reading this you would think he sat down and spent hours writing to get a script so clear, concise and descriptive.
But he didn't. He is VERY good at what he does........

19. I second that, dyedinthewoolliberal!
I always enjoyed listening to Vin. They're not too many like him anymore. Ross Porter sounded like he had marbles in his mouth.

I enjoy Bob Costas' coverage of the Olympics. His studio work was incredible with his essays.

Yes, BOSSHOG, Harry Kalas and Rich Ashburn were the best tandem announcers in baseball. Nothing said Phillies game like Kalas and Ashburn.

6. Pat Hughes
Yes I am biased toward the Cubs, but Pat Hughes is one the grearest announcers out there. I love Ron Santo, but he is not a good color commentary guy and yet Hughes makes Santo look knowledgeable. And Santo almost worships Pat's "genius". And so do I. He is a knowledgeable guy who studies all of baseball, not just the Cubs. And this past season, when my beloved Cubs were nearly unwatchable, Hughes kept us interested by painting a picture of the game and being honest in a gentle way.

7. Johnny Miller, John McEnroe, and especially Cynthia Potter
I prioritize announcers who tell me things I don't know. Miller and McEnroe are very good in that regard but I've mentioned previously that IMO diving commentator Cynthia Potter is head and shoulders above any other sports announcer. Sure it's an obscure sport but her instant analysis of the spins and angles during a dive is incredible.

Here's a review of the broadcasting of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics that properly singles out Potter:http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1374/is_n6_v56/ai_18844573

"Rarely in these 171.5 hours did we get to see a whole event, unless it was short. When we did see a sport, we learned little about it--even from the experts, many of them retired athletes probably instructed by NBC not to get too technical. A stellar exception was diving commentator Cynthia Potter. From her immediate and detailed descriptions, we learned what subtle turns of the body the judges watched for and what moves helped a diver make a clean entry."

20. As long as you take away the coach's clicker from Madden,
he was a good announcer. That back and forth with the coach's clicker drove me nuts. It's like, how many angles do you have to watch that play from?

I think/hope I spelled his name right. He use to broadcast for the Braves, he always, IMO did a fantastic broadcast...and of course Bob Uecker(I know my spelling is off, sue me)....Harry Carry was all right in my book, but thats about it...

The ones I dislike, Joe Morgan, and that old bald guy that commentates with him, and especially...JOE BUCK. I usually like fellow pro's turned commentator, but Joe Morgan sucks...sorry Morgan fans...

11. I was actually surprised at how good Steve Beuerlein was last weekend
Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 07:45 AM by underpants
he called the Redskins game with Don Crique (still around) and I was pleased by the fact that my intelligence was routinely insulted. This passes for good sports color commentary these days. Beuerlein commented on what was readily apparent in what was on the screen and offered good analysis of the play of the QBs. It was actually refreshing to hear that someone was actually watching the game and not just reading off derivative (from Madden usually) lines.

ON EDIT let me add
Costas (still the best)
Bill Curry- a delight to listen to his voice and his take on a game
The MNF crew is pretty good too in my opinion-I think I have succumbed to the Theismann thing

All the Braves announcers
and

13. Milo Hamilton calling an Astros game
"Among the milestones he has broadcast are Hank Aaron's 715th home run, Ernie Banks' fifth grand-slam of the 1955 season, seven no-hitters and Roger Maris' 61st homer (recreated on Western Union ticker). He was also on the Cardinals' broadcast crew when Stan Musial hit his record-breaking fifth home run in a doubleheader and he was doing the play-by-play 18 years later when San Diego's Nate Colbert duplicated Musial's feat."

On the one hand he used to talk rubbish, but on the other hand Grand Prix hasn't been the same without his overexcited high pitched voice over the top of all that engine noise. He was able to inject a bit of excitement into a sport that at times really isn't.

Edited on Sun Oct-22-06 03:31 AM by Indy_Dem_Defender
use to do tv announcing of the Indy 500 and other indy car races, Has a face for radio that's why he was demoted by ABC/ESPN. Page is an actual fan of the 500 unlike those idiots they have now announcing, I mean Rusty Wallace (Nascar Driver why?) was in the booth last may and called the the Indy 500 the "Greatest Daytona 500 he'd ever witnessed" what the f---? Anyways I saw Page going the announcing for the hot dog eating contest on Espn earlier in the year, still showed enthusiasm when most announcers would turn their noses up and be elitist snobs.
