UM chooses Shannon as head football coach

"The University of Miami has a new head football coach.

UM defensive coordinator Randy Shannon accepted the position Thursday, according to a well-placed university source.

An announcement by UM is scheduled for Friday.

Shannon, 40, a Miami native, becomes only the sixth black head coach in Division I football. He replaces Larry Coker, who was fired last month after six seasons."

1. Solid hire

Not a glamorous get, but he was near the top of almost everyone's list. Shannon should shore up recruiting in South Florida, which had lagged under Coker.

Now, what does he do with the offense? The current coordinator will almost certainly be replaced. There are rumors that Bernie Kosar and former assistant Marc Trestman are possibilities to return to the program.

The awkward aspect is Shannon coaching under Coker in the bowl game on December 31, knowing he will replace him literally the minute the game ends. I don't think I've ever seen that situation before.
