USC Offers Basketball Scholarship to 8th Grader |
|
Edited on Mon Jun-25-07 09:47 AM by erpowers
I the story about how the kid has verbally committed to USC, but I did not know that USC was offering him a scholarship. Even when I saw that the kid had verbally committed to the school I thought that was crazy. I do not see any reason why any 8th grader should be committing to any school for any reason. In addition, I think it is crazy that college coaches are even scouting and recruiting these kids. In my opinion Tim Floyd, USC coach, is a joke. To find the full story go to Fox sports news and you should see the story there.

You know I read the Fox sports story and then began reading some of the comments about the story. A number of the people mentioned 8th graders who were recruited and most of them did not pan out. There was one who was recruited in 8th grade while he was only 5'8" and only grew 2 inches after being recruited so his height after high school was 5'10", which is fairly short for a basketball player. It is just so silly for these coaches to be recruiting these kids when they are in the 8th grade.

3. I hada good friend who was recruited in 8th grade |
|
as a 6'2" forward. his father was 6"7", his mother was 6'2", coaches saw him as what would not be a dirk nowitzki type slashing shooting forward.
he never grew another inch. All-State in small school, but at the predicted 6'9", he'd have been at least a good Div I player.

I believe this is true . . . but, I am teaching a college class this summer and would like to use this, or similar stories, to create discussions.
