Which States Comprise New England?

Do the Pats represent the original 13 colonies? or just the N.E. states?

Ithaca, maybe, is New England, b/c it leans very, very left ... almost as though Cambridge had sprouted a colony. :) The rest of Upstate New York is more like Arkansas than New England ... run-down farms, junk cars on blocks, poor dental hygeine. :evilgrin:

your description of Upstate NY does match a good portion of Vermont, NH and Maine... so, perhaps New England is more varied in nature than the GOP cliche shows it to be.

14. I'm from the part of CT that roots for NY

Otherwise known as Fairfield County. I never saw a Pats, Sox or Celtics game growing up unless it was national. I grew up on a steady diet of Yankees and Giants. Thank God for that!

The long answer.

The Patriots were originally known as the Boston Partiots, an original franchise of the old AFL. The AFL & NFL merged; the AFL became know as the AFC.

At that time, the Patriots had no stadium of their own, playing in venues such as Fenway Park, Nickerson Field and Harvard Stadium.

In the 60's, they build a stadium (Sullivan) in Foxboro (no ugh, go figure), which is about 30 miles south of Boston. They were no longer in the city and wanted to attract new fans, so they changed their name to New England.

New England is comprised of the four original colonies(Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire) and two additional states (Vermont (which was a republic) and Maine (which was part of Massachusetts).

8. Hey I rooted for the "Pats" last night did get a little over the top a ...

few times yelling "Yeah"...just couldn't see a Superbowl between 2 Pa. teams. I did have a few strange looks but who cares...I like New England.

It's kinda complicated, but involves the tribal alliances and homelands prior to the conquests and settlement by English colonists. Basically, it's everything south of the St Lawrence drainage and east of the Hudson River drainage excluding the Richelieu and Hoosic Rivers. In present day Connecticut it's more complicated because Indian villages west of the Connecticut River there, in e.g. the Housatonic River basin, never belonged to the alliances to the east and north (Pocumtuck or Pequot, New England) or the Delaware Indian ones at the mouth of the Hudson (New York). The cultural and tribal-political lines set by Indians remain remarkably conserved to this day- in part because they follow along ecosystem divisions and geographical barriers, in part because different colonies/states had treaty systems with only particular tribal alliances and sabotaged each other when they tried to "poach" land, uh, 'acquisitions'. The Indians they knew also taught them how to adapt to the land/creatures/natural phenomena and seem to have given an attitudinal adaption too. The English intellectuals thought the New England Algonquins compared to the Iroquois like the ancient Greeks to the ancient Romans.

16. CT is indeed part of New England

Along with MA, RI, NH, ME and VT. However, some people look toward Gotham for their sports teams so some seem to think CT isn't really part of New England. I grew up in CT, lived in upstate NY for a while, and now I am in MA, and there is a definite difference between the New England states and NY. I can't put my finger on why, but the atmosphere is different, the architecture and some of the scenery.

However, I do know some people in CT who won't root for the Pats because Kraft used Hartford by threatening to move there in order to get a new stadium out of MA. A lot of people got their hopes up that CT would finally get a professional sports franchise of its own, after losing the Whalers to NC, only to realize they'd been used.
