That First Baseman For The Red Sox, The One With The Series Clinching Ball
He's going to be traded to the Mets today for a minor league player.

Is this guy any good? I heard he fields pretty well, but I know nothing about his hitting or anything. What spot did he bat in the order in Boston?

1. Is this retaliation?
Because the Red Sox are basically suing him to get that ball back.

It's Mientciewicz, I believe, and he is a decent player. Could the Mets have made a smart trade for once?

No, it's the Mets, what am I thinking?

Didn't hit last year, looks up and do_n, every other year he hits.

He is a good fielder.

3. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?
Doug Mientkiewicz is a gold-glove first-baseman. I really hope they aren't doing this because he has the fucking ball.

:grr:

4. He couldn't get his bat into the line up last season. The Sox
used him as a late-innings defensive replacement. Guess they can get a part-time glove man for much less.

6. The dismantling of the Red Sox continues...
I'm betting heavily that they'll be out of the post season next year.

7. Don't sweat it Boston fans
While being an excellent fielder, he's just not a prototype hitter for a 1B. His career high in HR's is 15, career high in RBI's is 74. He's hit .300 a couple of times, and draws some walks.

There are better options, aka, Kevin Millar.

8. Doug Mientkiewicz is a former Twin
He is an excellent fielder and has won a gold glove (should have won at least two), however, his hitting depends upon the year. He is really streaky at the plate. He was also on the 2000 USA Olympic baseball team.

Here is more information about Dougie Defense!

9. He was brought in for defense
Edited on Wed Jan-26-05 04:10 PM by skippysmom
That was the whole rationale behind getting rid of Nomar and bringing in Doug Mientkiewicz and Orlando Cabrera. But now they've decided they have one too many first basemen, so they're keeping Millar instead.

I wonder if the ball thing tipped it in his favor. He got on the wrong side of Dan Shaughnessy, which seems to be the death knell for any Boston player.

edited for spelling

12. He's similar to David Segui in his prime
Good glove, little power, nice average hitter.

He's a guy you can carry at 1B if you've got some sluggers elsewhere. I don't think he's a particularly good match for the Mets, but there wasn't much else available.

14. Potential batting order
Jose Reyes SS S
Kaz Matsui 2B S
Carlos Beltran CF S
David Wright 3B R
Cliff Floyd LF L
Mike Piazza C R
Doug Mienkiewicz 1B L
Mike Cameron RF R
Pitcher
3 switch hitters to start the lineup, all with good speed, then righty-lefty down the order. Pretty balanced.
Mienky is a good OBP guy, lefty bat, righty glove, selective at the plate, but no power. Can pick it at first, and has excellent range.
