Yankees again set payroll record: $218.3 million

NEW YORK -- The Yankees did finish first in something last year -- spending.

While their streak of AL East titles ended at nine, the Yankees wound up with a record payroll of $218.3 million.

The World Series champion Boston Red Sox were a distant second at $155.4 million, according to information received by clubs from the commissioner's office. The Los Angeles Dodgers were third at $125.6 million, followed by the New York Mets ($120.9 million), Chicago Cubs ($115.9 million), Seattle ($114.4 million), Los Angeles Angels ($111 million), Philadelphia ($101.8 million), San Francisco ($101.5 million) and the Chicago White Sox ($100.2 million).

In addition to the largest payroll, the Yankees have the highest revenue in the majors. New York took in $415 million last year, giving about $100 million of it away in the sport's revenue-sharing plan.

5. still
those are the facts. The Red Sox bought their world series title. And that doesn't even include the posting fee for Matzunaka.

6. Here's what I say
The Red Sox have inflated their payroll because they need to compete with the Yankees. Other teams have inflated their payrolls because they need to compete with the Red Sox, and so on down the line. However, the Yanks were the first team to start posting these massive payrolls and for a long time, they enjoyed significant advantages from it. There is some truth that the Sox bought the title because they trounced the Angels and also overcame Cleveland. However, that remark doesn't tell the whole story because they still had to get past the Yankees, with their much higher payroll, in order to do so. While I hold NY responsible for putting baseball in the position it's in today as regards rosters and payrolls, I agree that they're no longer the only offender. Only a real salary cap and revenue sharing will result in parity.

7. nonsense
the Yanks haven't won a world series since their payroll exploded.

And there already is a great deal of parity. The Rockies were in the World Series. The Indians in the alcs. The races were close to the end. Baseball is making more money than ever. Some teams choose to spend to compete. Others don't. A salary floor is needed. Revenue sharing already exists to a large degree. Do you know that the Marlins pocket more in revenue sharing than they spend on payroll. That's a crime.

9. The Red Sox Payroll Was Actually $206 million
The 2007 Red Sox payroll does not include the $51 million posting fee that they paid to that Japanese baseball team for DiceK.
